Re: Updates on the new start page

I never see the front page ... I check user control panel first, for updated threads I've posted in before, then New Posts, to skim over all of the other new posts since I last logged in to see if there's anything of interest ...

Also, I haven't noticed a real reduction in activity compared to this time last year ... as Slaphead showed with his pretty graph.

Re: EF is getting a slightly new look

I started reading this thread, with the noble intention of addressing all feedback, but by about page three I lost the will to live.

I think you just have to accept that in 2009 the forum entered a new paradigm. No longer is the platform built by the community. Rather, the platform is provided as is by a commercial entity. We have our reasons for making changes. Some are transparent, some remain our commercial secret sauce.

For your part, you can choose whether to make the most of it, or not. The forum discussions, events, marketplace, and moderation all remain community driven. The community-driven bits are the bits that you own. These are the bits you can take pride in, can take ownership of, and can change or improve.

Gotta be the quote of the week.

This could be the new EF strap line at the top of each page...

Re: EF is getting a slightly new look

I like this new EF. I'm picturing Editor Bob as a young Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi with large bollocks and guns. Lots of guns.

In short, the message is this: "if you don't like it, you can leave. I will not bow to the protests of the lowly citizen"

Apparently, he's cutting off Internet access to us all. Except to EF, of course.

Editor Bob - doing things President Barack can only dream of

It would have been nice if the owners had even responded to everyones constructive and helpful criticism. Just a "thanks anyway" would have gone some way to making some folk round here feel their valuable time wasn't wasted.

I find your response a rather long version of "I still didn't read your feedback, (and can't be bothered if it is later than page 3) and I do not give a thing about your opinion. Shut up and post."

Sorry, but your paradigm answer is plain rubbish - the feedback was not on "who builds the platform", it was hands-on usability issues - we had a lot of useful features you killed with the new design. But I won't repeat the points if you do not read them anyway.

Re: EF is getting a slightly new look

Trev, could you make a list of the particular features that have 'gone missing'? (The only one I can remember off the top of my head is that you can't see who started a thread any more.)

I know there was a lot of griping about web design, colors, space given over to advertising - but if there are particular bits of usability that have been lost, maybe we can re-incorporate them somehow.

Erm... what a grand new idea. I whish I though of making a list... back to page one:

+1 for this one: I personally am not really impressed with the way the new start page looks like. To be precise, I am missing some info I have today:
- who is the OP (sorry to say so, but there are members who I do not bother reading)
- which part of the forum is the discussion in? (rumor has it that some people here like to make parodies of "serious" threads and I would like to see at first glance if it is in daily life or jokes)
- who made the last response

I really like:
- that the events are a bit promoted, I think EF is currently lacking a bit there and used to be much more active...

I do not take things personal at all. If you happen to come to Zurich, I am more than happy to pay you a beer. But: Up to now I think you frankly suck at your job. I would not say so if you are an unpaid mod, but since you earn a living with this:
- the EF has never crashed nearly as often as in the past months.
- the usability has never been as bad as today.
- You asked for feedback, you got it, you didn't give a about it. Bad style, soft skills need improvement.
- You do not react on serious issues raised in a somewhat timely manner but reply with sarcy comments instead.

In short: Please get more competent.

Trev - you can't blame EB for the fact that the signal to whine ratio on this thread was so low

OK, two out of those three have been fixed. You can now see who started the thread, and which subforum it is in.

What you still can't see is who the most recent poster is. We could add that information but I think it would only create more confusion as the most recent post is not always the one excerpted.

I hoped this is a temporary bug - or is this a feature of the new design?

P.S: As only mods or thread starters can change the tags... I suspect it was not EB himself tagging "satan designed new ef", was it?

Re: EF is getting a slightly new look

It's a feature. I think right now it's the "most recent post of >200 characters" - something like that. May be tweaked in future until we find what works.

Basically the idea is to highlight a recent substantial contribution to the thread, rather than some one-liner or visual gag which may actually be more recent. If you want to see the most recent post/poster no matter what, I guess that's what the "New posts" page is for.

Didn't the old homepage, had the starting post info/summary when you put your mouse over the title? the New posts section has it, but I can remember if homepage did.

Nope - it was the OP of the second thread (the one with the poll) which then got merged into this one. In retrospect not such a brilliant move, as it now looks as though EB started the poll himself - he didn't; the original was just supposed to be an announcement, hence its location.

As a result, you see hoppy's posts. Long doesn't mean substance. For me, the feature doesn't make sense and I would display the last one regardless of the number of characters.
