Re: EF is getting a slightly new look

hmh when i click on messages, i don't see my inbox but my latest rep received.
I have to work around it to see my messages.. what was to be done in 1 click takes now 2 or 3 ( my poor mouse arm)

And why the big blank space on the right top side..can you move the " logged in as " block to the right again, keep the empty space in the middle for any possible advertisers?

Regarding advertisers, how come the banners are only on the front page and not on every single one of them? i rarely go to the first page, always " new posts " first, i never see the banners.. not that i miss them or anything ,just sucks to be an advertiser and not getting full exposure. ( i am not an advertiser btw)

Now that you broke it, can you fix it again to what it was please ?

The quicksearch seems to be fairly useless as it doesn't seem to be indexing all of the pages.

I went to the off topic section, and did a search for two items appearing in the top 10 threads there. One returned no results (Queensland, should have returned this thread: Major floods in Central Queensland, Australia) and the second returned a completely different result (Christchurch, should have returned this thread: Massive earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand).

The second returned a result for a thread titled Christmas invading Oriental culture? "Christmas boycott" petition can rest now (1), but clicking on the result returns a list of http://www.englishforum.ch/index.php?showtopic=2915, the home page.

Editor Bob, did you release this and then go on holiday?

ETA, where does one find a list of all subscribed threads with new posts?
Having said previously I liked the new look I obviously judged it a bit early, seems to have quite a few errors. There is no reply from the owners so far and this is not correct: you don't go live and then no remain contactable as your project goes into Production. That is just plain impolite.

I have to say my long held thoughts of setting up something like this forum myself due to the way this one seems to be heading it getting more tempting. Would there be any appetite for this ? If there are enough people disaffected then I am sure we could set something up, however as pointed out forums survive on their userbase so there isn't any point unless there is a groundswell of opinion that a new approach is requested.

Uh, is the search box supposed to be this big? It takes up half my screen...

I'm still running IE6 (corporate std) if that helps...

Sure there will be appetite but is there need for? English forum is a household brand name now, everyone knows it, its going to be hard to compete with and at some stage you will need to upgrade also..its hard to satisfy all users i guess?

I agree with you on the changes and no reply policy , they should at least give us answers or see what they can do with our "constructive " comments.

What would you call yours "englishforumbutbetter.ch" (meanwhile someone in Berlin / Stockholm will now go online to reserve this link.. )
(only joking mod's/owners/editors - just get back to us regarding the changes and comments made)

IE6? does it run on the latest windows 95 or 98 edition? Fancy , yet shocking how many companies still use IE6 - or IE in general..

in IE8 - Firefox the searchbox is huge also..wonder if the people who edit the forum also tested these things before going live with them..

Shootingthecheese is part of EF history - not really "just another site".

Re: EF is getting a slightly new look

Well, one good thing has come out of this.
I have forgiven Mr L.

He has recently been spending a LOT of time doing a new Home Page for a Club we are involved in. Hours and hours and hours, day after day trying out all the new features on various browsers and emailing and asking others on the team what it looked like on their screen. He asked whether they could access what they needed to access, what they thought of the look of it, how easy it was to find what they needed, all this LONG, LONG, LONG before he connected the whole thing up to the normal link for the club and other members had access to the site. And, lucky members, they didn't have to put up with all those minor hiccoughs which, I am assured, always occur when alterations are made and which drive everyone who is used to the old Site to distraction.

So Mr L. really did know what he was on about.
Go thou and do likewise.

This must be some illogical bug that effects some users/systems and not others. I don't think it is browser specific.
I have opened EF home page in Firefox, Chrome and IE8 and it appears to be "normal" size in all. From r.h.s., it only lakes up approx. 20% of screen width when in full screen mode - less than half of the space to where "Log out" is written in the middle(ish).
@Village Idiot - you appear not to show menu options (8 in total) on the same toolbar as the search box, in your screen shot - do you have these?
If there are so many idiosyncrasies for so many users, I'm not surprised this is becoming complaints corner.
I must be one of the lucky ones - apart from noticing just a few minor changes, it's very much business as usual - and no where near as bad, as what was at first proposed, in the example link, at the head of this thread.

Nope, no menu bars at all, at least on the top of the page. I'll need to look again to see if they've been shoved down to the bottom of the page (this also happens in Facebook -- I suspect it's something to do with my Java on the work config). Nothing I can do about it -- our systems are fully locked-down and can only be updated centrally.

Seems to work fine on my home PC (IE7).

same for me as well, I barely noticed any change at all, still, I'm not really a hard core user, might have something to do with it.

Re: EF is getting a slightly new look

Well, the search field on the 'main page' jumps me neatly to the search page and puts the word I'm looking for into the right place which is definitely a step in the right direction. It can't find it yet but it is obviously getting there. Anyway, when I tried it was comforting the see an Ad on the right which said 'Relax don't stress' which was rather sweet.
