Restoration of lost attachments - your help needed

Due to a recent incident we have unfortunately lost all attachments (files attached to messages) prior to this date.

But the good news is that we have a list of the lost attachment, so maybe you can help to restore these files.

You can find a list here of all the attachments and the posts to which they were attached. Please scan through the list - it is sorted by username, so it's easy to scroll down and see if you are on it. If you are, you can click the provided link to be taken directly to the post where the message used to be attached. Here you can edit the post (hint, once you start to edit, click on "Advanced") and reupload the missing files. If you don't have the file anymore, then remove the attachment so that it doens't appear as an error, and possibly insert an apology for the fact that the file is no longer attached.

If everyone who has attached files to posts in the past checks this list and reuploads their files, we can all benefit.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Re: Restoration of lost attachments - your help needed

I've just fixed or deleted all of the attachments that I'd previously posted, so I just thought that I'd give this a quick bump to encourage others to do the same.

I have a feeling that many of the people who need to see this haven't, so I might actually send a PM to everyone who posted attachments in the past to draw their attention to this thread.

Thanks for this, Mark. One drawback from going back to posts made Donkey's years ago is trying to remember what image was used

Still, least we can do and it might even give us a chance to edit...

Tried to do this for my posts... but am I right in thinking posts in closed threads can no longer be edited? (Obviously they're closed therefore not important anymore... )

cheers,

Crikey - I've done so many lolcats I've no idea which ones went where anymore...
I knew wasting all that time would come back to haunt me eventually...

Mark's list gives the filename you originally uploaded for a given post. From there it's just a matter of locating those on your own system. The list shows you had 35 of 'em.

The pic I used for my link has disappeared from the site I pinched it from into the ether. Wasn't important.

Re: Restoration of lost attachments - your help needed

Ok - some good news. I managed to lay my hands on an old backup, where I found about 500 attachments from prior to 02 June 2007. I managed to shoe-horn them back into the database and they seem to be working.

So that means out of the 1500 or so lost attachments we have 500 of them back. It also means we had 1000 attachments between June and November! Probably mostly of cats with silly text messages on them mind you...

If you've already deleted any attachments from those old messages then your attachments won't have been restored (this was about 30 of those 500), but the really old stuff which you can't find anymore is most likely back.

I've updated the list so you now see only the missing attachments listed after 02 June 2007, and a link is provided on that page to check and verify the attachments which I did restore if you should so wish.

At the same time I managed to squeeze out a couple of more lost avatars and profile pictures (not a lot mind you) and we might be able to recover a few more of the lost photos from the photo system, but no promises...
