Remembering Mark (EF Founder) - 5 years on

On Sunday, 10th March 2013, it will be 5 years to the day that Mark Fyvie, the founder of English Forum, was tragically taken from us in a diving accident in Florida. Cave diving was one of Mark's greatest passions, and his loss rocked many communities at the time, EF being one of them.

English Forum has grown, evolved and diversified since it's humble beginning, and although it may not exist today exactly how he envisioned, it is his legacy for which all members, past and present, have benefited. He is the father of this community.

But for some, like myself, Mark was more than just the founder of EF. He was dedicated, thoughtful, meticulous and generous, with very little detail left unattended. He was fun and inspirational to be around.

Above all, he was my close friend. For this loss I have no words, just fond memories.

I just ask you all to take a minute on Sunday 10th March 2013 to spare a minute to remember Mark, and offer a thought for his family and loved ones. The original tribute thread is here (closed).

If you choose to pay tribute by replying, the appropriate respect is expected.

Thank You

Litespeed

Moderators: I know this thread may not exactly belong here, but I think it should be in a place that gets exposure. Perhaps it could remain prominent/sticky until a short time after the 10th, then merged with the original tribute thread. Thank you.

Re: Remembering Mark (EF Founder) - 5 years on

Losing a good friend hurts but the memories of them always bring warmth to the heart. Five years seems long and time does heal the sting but the hole in one's heart never closes.

Mark, my thoughts are with you. I hope you feel the energy EF gives off. Sometimes it's enough to light up a city. And it's all because of one idea: yours.

Thank you and may you be in a good place.

Re: Remembering Mark (EF Founder) - 5 years on

I didn't know him personally as I joined few months before the tragedy. I do remember the strong feeling of loss the entire forum felt when the news came in. Mark was a generous, warm person and this forum was a wonderful gift to all of us.

I would like to give my deepest respect and love to all of you who were close friends to him. I had this wonderful chance to grow next to you for the last 5 years and you all and Mark made a huge impact of my life.

Thank you Mark, thank you for EF and thank you dear friends who are still here, keeping Mark's souvenir and forum alive.

Nil

I'm sure The Architect is still watching EF from somewhere after the Reboot.

or , I can't figure it out.

Let's also not forget Lynn and Lilly. No matter what anyone else felt, Lynn was there every day with Mark until his premature departure from this life.

Well judging from how the website is now I'd say Mark did a bang up job (good job).

Helping people is one of the things that life is about, not bottom line type decisions made by bottom line corporate people.

live on !!!

Thanks for the reminder Litespeed. I only met Mark once at a lunch event, and he was very humble

(I never became the Mod we briefly discussed )

Where we are today is a great testament to his initiative. My sincere regards and thoughts to Lynn and all other close family, friends and Mods he left behind.

Re: Remembering Mark (EF Founder) - 5 years on

I cant believe its been 5 years already.....

When i first joined EF, Mark helped me alot over pms. Its just a shame i never got to meet him in person.

I know for a fact that this forum has played a huge roll in my life over the last 5/6 years and also the path that i am currently on. Not just socially, finding a gaming buddy like Ouchboy, finding a Rugby Club and making life long friends, but also with my business.

For this i will always be eternally greatful to Mark and its something i will never forget.

My thoughts are with Lynn and Mark's family............even though his brother should of sold EF to me rather than the evil Local.

cheers
SC

Re: Remembering Mark (EF Founder) - 5 years on

If it hadn't been for Mark and his creation of EF I would have left Switzerland after a year. I found this site as I was at my wits end trying to find people to hang out with and was too shy to randomly chat with people in the expat bars etc as a couple of attempts had proved disastrous.

If that had happened, I wouldn't have my daughter, the job that I love, the wonderful network of friends I have and the lovely lifestyle that we have in Switzerland.

I only knew Mark through pm's but he gave me some great advice and seemed a very intelligent and caring person.

I really thank him from the bottom of my heart and my thoughts are with his friends and family.

I will be in Manchester partying with my sister on the 10th but will certainly raise a glass in his memory.

Re: Remembering Mark (EF Founder) - 5 years on

Lynn (who is no longer an EF member), has asked me post this on her behalf:

Quote:

thank you all for paying tribute to Mark. He should be remembered and not forgotten. But I do ask that this thread remain about him and as I am sure you will all understand, I would prefer not to be mentioned. He was a big part of my life and I will never forget him. But unlike Mark I am alive and cannot be frozen in time to some "perfect" moment in the past. I appreciate your kind thoughts and intentions and hope you understand that bringing me into this thread makes me feel uncomfortable.
Thank you in advance for respecting her wishes also.

Re: Remembering Mark (EF Founder) - 5 years on

A "calm" evening as usual in the Talacker bar, then Mark falls into a pond = 'Legendary'

He was a great guy. I've never met someone so driven and with so much on the go at the same time, yet he always found time to talk to people.

Thank you for EF, and for my memories that you created inadvertently via this forum. The opportunities it gave me in CH would never have happened without it.

I really appreciate what you did for me that night and I've never spoken about it. I might not be the ideal model of an individual either life wise or morally to those that know me, and I'll never be as driven as you, but you left me with an impression in that bar that night that I could achieve anything. I really needed that at that time and I will never forget that.

Thanks Cat
