Re: Mourning the loss of a friend, a leader, an innovator, a genuinely nice guy

I just saw this because I have not been on the forum for a while. I am so saddened for Lynn, and all of Mark's family. I cannot imagine the complexity of emotions they must be feeling. My thoughts will be with you all in the coming days and months.

I don't know what your personal beliefs are, and I would hope this would not be offensive, but I have always found this poem to be comforting in a time of loss. I hope the spirit of posting it will be of some comfort, if the words themselves are not.

Quote:
He is not dead - this friend - not dead,
But in the path we mortals tread
Got some trifling steps ahead,
And nearer to the end;
So that you, too, once past the bend
Shall meet again, as face to face, this friend
You fancy dead.
~ Robert Louis Stevenson

I'm sad and shocked to have heard this news as I was in the process of moving to Switzerland at last after a whole year of researching on the forum. I'm very sorry that I never had a chance to meet Mark. His efforts to help expats figure out the Swiss life had certainly helped me and my wife make a transition to this country. My thoughts and prayer are with his fiance and family.

Dear All,

I have finally organised the memorial event. It will be held at the Tobelhof on Monday 31st of March 2008.

It will start around 17:30 to 18:00ish. If any of you who knew Mark well would like the chance to say a few words please email me. I need to try and coordinate things some what... they will be quite informal...

I am very sorry for your loss. I never met him and just found out who is was today. I am so greatful to him for designing this fabulous website. It has made my transition into life here in Basel so much easier. All the helpful posts and great friends I have found on here and who have found me. It has also made my business grow very quickly. I will definitley be donating to this wonderful website and hope it will continue to grow in his honor. Cheers, Barry

Hi everyone - I don't visit the forum very often but I just wanted to offer my condolences to Marks family and to thank Mark himself for creating such a wonderful forum that we have here!

I only wish I'd had the chance to meet him in person, but alas it wasn't to be - perhaps some other time or dimension we might meet one day.

Anthony.

I'd just like to thank Lynn for her wonderful tribute to Mark at the rememberance event last night - a truly fitting, warm, eloquent and heartfelt tribute to a wonderful guy. Lynn - your words, your tribute - they were wonderful.

I'd also like to thank everyone who has contributed to this eulogy to Mark and all he achieved in his time with us. At the same time, I would also like to thank those who've donated and those who have auctioned items with proceeds going towards the Englishforum that Mark created and nurtured. You know who you are - give yourselves a pat on the back.

Thanks again for the opportunity to be there last night and share and meet others. I've let my colleagues know how who met Mark once and couldn't make it, how it went. Looking forward to Becky's (Hillseeker's) future events. In the meantime if I can help with EF going forward, please let me know.

Thank you Lynn, for posting your tribute to Mark.

As I was one of the later arrivals, I had missed this part of the evening, so it is really nice to be able to read it here today.

I think many people benefitted from being able to come together at this sad and difficult time, and I hope you did too. You did a great job at organising it.

Re: Mourning the loss of a friend, a leader, an innovator, a genuinely nice guy

Dear Mark,

Thank you for building this community, and thank you for the few exchanges you and I have had on this forum. I regret not having met you in person. That opportunity is totally my loss.

What you did here is not a technical feat, and this is not simply a bulletin board. What you did was to build a community, and that is a feat of a different kind - a feat of a different level. I acknowledge you as someone who believed in, and worked towards, the next level.

Though I never known you intimately, I think I have a clue on your motivation for building this site. I believe you had a keen sense for the brilliance of individuals. I believe this came from the awareness of your own. You wanted to share! I know you cared. But even more so, we know you acted.

Thank you for getting me my green rep bars. It made me quite proud and welcome on the forum. Thank you for your patience with my rants. Though I know they sometimes annoyed you, I also knew you understood. Afterall, never had you said an unkind word.

Some may flatly say you are dead. But your actions made impact in this world, and more importantly, in the lives of people. Those impacts have the fingerprints of your soul. As for me, I consider you more alive than those who breathe, yet make no impact for good.

Brother, live on brightly in the next level!

Peace,
Marco

Lynn,

I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am that I did not respond to your post about the Memorial for Mark. Unfortunately, I had to attend my cousins funeral and just returned. I hope it was a lovely Memorial and I look forward to hearing about it. Send me a note when you have a moment.

Lots of Love, Cynthia

I was watching the movie "Duma" last night. Beautiful movie. I thought about Lynn and Mark specially when the kid said something about "time" near the end
Reminded me of my childhood as well. Really worth a watch.

I returned from SF 2 days ago and was very sad to read about Mark's diving accident. Although I never had the opportunity to meet him, I will always be grateful that he had the talent, vision and determination to start the English Forum and maintain it with such professional standards.
The outpouring of love and respect for him here has greatly touched me - he was truly an amazing individual - and my heart and condolences go out to Lynn and all his friends and family.
