When The Local purchased EF this is exactly what they wrote in their opening post when the transfer was done:

Englishforum is a business venture for The Local and if they don't have the time or the willingness to invest the time and money running EF in the years to come, maybe they should give it back to the community.

Without members posting there will be no EF. If members move elsewhere, there always will be EF
I think more people probably would be more active here if they didn't have to deal with all the nonsense and the aggression that so often comes with it. It's pretty obvious that some people here just enjoy arguing and trying to initiate arguments and trapping people in arguments. That relentless desire to prove one's self right and everybody else wrong. I've also seen new posters treated pretty awfully here, which certainly doesn't encourage someone to stick around.

I'll be honest -- I was hoping that a week (or whatever it was) away from here would cause more people to chill out and perhaps come to realize that life is more enjoyable the less time we spend arguing with strangers on the internet. I have a friend in the UK who once told me that years ago, he stopped trying to prove himself right to strangers on the internet, and I think he made an excellent point.

Regarding the mod changes... I assume the new admin and/or The Local had their reasons. And if people don't like it, well... use of this forum is not mandatory. And let's face it, many of us spend more time here than we probably should be. I can only hope that the removed mods will end up finding that they now have more time to enjoy their lives and less time that they have to deal with this virtual madhouse.

I do respect the new admin for stepping in and trying to get this forum under control, because it has very much felt out of control in the past year or two (I don't blame that necessarily on the mods but more on just all the arguing and targeting and the "side A versus side B crap" that's been going on here).

This is an online forum intended to be useful for expats. I don't think it was created as a place for people to waste hours each day arguing in circles about stuff that they really don't have the power to change anyways.

Sorry to ramble... I took a high-potency vitamin B complex tablet this morning; and holy shnitzel, I feel like I'm on Methamphetamines.

To enable me to warn my friends against making a similar error, perhaps you can PM me where you acquired this appalling drug. And, er, how much it cost...?

Ha haa! I actually just realized / remembered that it wasn't my Burgerstein B-Komplex vitamins that I took this morning. It was my Burgerstein Multivitamin, which has a lot of B12 and vitamin D and vitamin C, etc. in it. You can buy either of those at most pharmacies here. I was thinking it was the Burgerstein B-Komplex that I had taken because that often gives me a lot of energy, too. Both are a little bit pricey, at around 30 CHF per bottle, but it's worth it when you think of it as only equating to 1 CHF per day.

I use to only take a Centrum multivitamin each day that only has 100% of everything in it. But getting that double dose (200%) of vitamins B12, C and D, etc. seems to really make a difference (in me, at least).

I personally would like to thank all the mods - past, present and future - for the (usually) thankless task they perform. In their own time, when they could be doing something better (and more enjoyable)!

It is not easy herding this ragbag collection of cats - especially when some have such obvious personality problems.

Although I had previously found FMF a sometimes annoying poster and occasionally disruptive opinionator (translation: "sometimes said stuff I didn't agree with"), I have to say that as a mod he was both active in his reponse to my queries, fair in his views, and both calm and measured in his approach to a resolution. All of which took place behind the scenes.

The best moderation goes unnoticed.

I hope the forum goes from strength to strength. It IS a useful resource for newbies here, and SHOULD be a fun community for the same people as they stay on.

As Michael Harold said: "take care and be kind."

Kind regards

Ian
For sure all mods had better times and I also thank them for those times.

As for the new admin (or is it the old one, reformed and improved?), I think he's doing what it takes to keep this forum decent, and at least he tries to communicate with us, peasants, in the open, a thing that the previous one never did lately (never?), or I don't remember.

So cheers to MichaelHarold and good luck with his tasks!

I don't find it amazing that people care about the forum. Not at all.

Over the years, and in between - or, more accurately, apart from, the squabbling - this forum has helped many people, and still does.

Some need to understand how their permits will work or what their options are for their children's schooling, or the significance of the three-pillar system, or where to buy certain products.

Beyond those everyday matters, this forum has, in various combinations of online posts and personal interventions offline, rescued a number of people from confusing and even dire situations, and actually saved lives. Having witnessed how wonderful users here can mobilise to reach out and help, be it with information, care or advice, sometimes with practical help, and best of all when also with compassion, I'm very grateful that this forum exists, and can fully understand why people care about it.

Also: sometimes it's a good place to read something really witty, and nearly choke on one's chuckle-infused coffee.
Extremely well said. In this way I owe so much to this forum and with this in mind try very hard to respect its members by not ever getting personal or taking sides and staying independent, and contributing in helping others in a very real way.

Doropfiz for me is one of EFs ‘most helpful’ and I would be happy if I was half as much as her on here….|

Re: Update regarding the forum

This forum has helped me tremendously.
99.9% of the times it has been great....a fantastic resource.
I have learnt so much and asked multiple questions.

My biggest surprise was the entire Corona Vaccination discussion.
It felt a bit surreal.......
However what surprised me was Reddit venting about EF.....esp. considering the state Reddit itself is in. That said, once it was on Reddit, I expected something like what has happened.

That said, if we can get back to the task at hand and reserve our 'out there' musings for Reddit, then we will be sorted.
Because people can express what they want away from EF and EF stays safe....:-)

And while I don't know the moderators, I always saw them doing what they could to keep this a safe space for all....

Upwards and onwards.... :-)

Lol. I am sorry, but I had a reason for that.

Honestly, most of the time when I come to this forum now, I just find myself regretting it. There are just too many people here who enjoy trying to start an argument or be condescending toward others because somehow that makes them feel better about themselves. It's nice when people can get along and joke around and/or be supportive of one another, but unfortunately, those times seem quite rare. It's like anything and everything here can so easily be turned into an argument or debate by someone else or of course the random passive-aggressive comment that somehow always magically appears from our favorite super hero, Internet Aggression Man. As it is now, I was asked which supplement I took and then someone has to ask why I don't just get my vitamins through food, which in turn puts me in the position of choosing to ignore it or take the time to explain my digestive system to a stranger on the internet.

It's a beautiful morning. I'm sitting here with my coffee now, but plan to get out and enjoy some sunshine while it's still here. I hope everyone else can do the same.

That would have been ~1991. Yes they had. Compuserve and it's chat-rooms was a big thing in England exactly at that time. Some English actually went bankrupt (I'm not kidding!) due to their chat-addiction, the fee then was hourly.

Reddit is just another, but global, forum. The threads started there were just to stir sh1t, started no doubt by former and/or current EF members who were either unhappy with the modding/had a vendetta against FMF/reprisal for losing their modding status or mod friends.
Could also be about power/dominance/superiority/control. The earlier mods were big on their status within this forum.

As Reddit is much less moderated than EF, I can only presume it was personal, as EF is a community.

But I know shit.

Yeah, but that doesn't sound as nice. He could have a female equivalent to balance things out.

Internet Aggression Man lives in his parents basement, drinks too much Budweiser, hasn't had a girlfriend in over a decade, thinks he's the sh** because he has 50 likes on his YouTube channel and likes to watch porn while eating Pringles.
