online retail and shipping

Hi All,

I am looking into starting an online retail biz and wanted to know if anyone has found a reasonably priced shipping service for both CH-CH and CH-EU shipping?
Packages will typically be less than 2 kilos and about the size of a small shoe box at most.
Research I've done so far has only turned up utterly ridiculous pricing with various organisations, including swiss post. Prices are such that it would actually be cheaper for me to get in the car and deliver stuff myself if i didnt have to manage the biz!

thanks for any wisdom imparted

Re: online retail and shipping

Never used them myself, but a few companies I've ordered from have used DPD.

Most though have just used the post office, which might imply that there's not much choice.

Well, the usual suspects have outrageous 100% tariffs... if you want to use their service for a fraction of the current rates, you'd have to have an account and guaranteed x shipments per week.

Alternatively, check out if you can use a forwarder that will only charge you a minimum premium (maybe you'd have to drop off the packages) or a friendly business, that has the required volume to send out courier goods cheaper.

If you want it really cheap, you'd have to send it from outside CH, as courier rates drop drastically beyond the border (as with almost anything else).

You find 7 CHF for a 2 KG package with Die Post within Switzerland rediculous ???

Would be happy to learn which car/moped/bicycle you are driving if you can in any way do that cheaper yourself.

Re: online retail and shipping

DPD were one of my researched organisations, and are a decent choice if your shipping more than 3000 items a year.

Buyer will pay shipping but the problem i have is that shipping costs nearly double the end buyers purchase price on most products, not exactly a good biz formula, and i refuse to operate on the swiss principle of just raping clients wallets. yeah, money is good, but not at the expense of repeat business. I want customers to come back because pricing is, dare I say it, Resonable, and Customer Service transcends anything that the swiss have ever experienced, i.e., it exists. Wouldnt that be a shocking thing here! .......

Mirfield was fastest

Anyway. I find 7 CHF to be very cheap. I had a web shop in DK and the postage price was about 50% higher and if the customer wanted to return the item, you had to pay back shipping charges also.......

Good luck on your business adventure.
