career to me is when you find that occupation that you really enjoy, are real good at and think you might be doing it for the rest of your life....
But you can have "a career" in a field without ever particularly feeling that way. Consider the idea of somebody who starts out as a teacher because they can't think of anything else they particularly want to do, then gets married and has a family, and stays as a teacher because it fits in with their family life, and ends up in teaching (perhaps with a few changes of school, maybe some promotion) for 20 years. At no point have they felt they were really good at it, and at no point did they particularly intend to do it for the rest of their life, but I expect if you asked them, "when did you start your teaching career," they would say, "20 years ago when I first started teaching," rather than, "oh, not, it's not a career, it's just a job that I've been doing for 20 years."

Re: When did you start your career?

Hi,

I started my career as an accountant during my University course. Worked for several years thinking of changing my profession, and finally decided to start my own business. Now really enjoying it.

Some advice: Just think of what you're passionate about and constantly develop yourself in that direction. Some day some one will need your expertise.

Re: When did you start your career?

When I was 18. Never really limited myself to thinking I will stick to it, but with gaining experiences and having some students and their families sticking to me for a decade or more at times, I must have done something well, experiences make my work even more enjoyable. I always told myself as long as I have fun and people to help, I will do it. I was geared up for a different path due to family tradition but found that too grim and sad. Teaching is really positive, you recharge on students' successes. It's one of those jobs that some handy routine work done over a few years make some stuff automatic and easy and one can really focus on the fascinating intricacies. Teaching is not stating the truth but teaching how to look for it.

interesting question:

How do we define 'career'?

for instance, if you are interested in Academic Research, when does your career begin? at the PhD? PostDoc? Senior Scientist? Assistant-Prof? Tenure?

just semantics but yeah.
I actually feel that academic research, per se, is just a vehicle. You do that if you really really love the field you want to research, not just because you like to research, irrespectively of what you are researching. I never thought I would fall into the phd path, but since I love the field I am doing my phd in and can't stop learning, I can imagine continuing my entire life, in some ways. It's a good investment, too. But combining academia with hands on job suits me the best, since while I need cerebral approach to my daily work, I still get antsy being around spacey academics for too long.

Re: When did you start your career?

This is one of the best posts I have read on EF. Really inspiring reading your career stories especially st2Leman(I hope I got that right)

Right now I'd rather be scouting and selling vintage clothing, my passion but I am working on a consulting project here - was moved to CH by my company. My career definitely has not started as I would like but you have to roll with the punches and make it something.

Currently considering going back to UK to actually get my real passion going. I was able to do buying and selling of vintage clothing in UK and I was building a good network of suppliers but being in Switzerland has sort put a hold on that. I am still investigating the market here to see what can be done as i really like CH. There is definitely a market for vintage but the size of the market makes me doubt the financial viability of opening a vintage store here in CH.

For now, the current consulting career is ok but it is definitely getting changed within the next 2-3 years.
