Both companies got as far as reading my requirements spec and did not even quote on the job. I'm guessing that's because they realised there was little money in it.
Why don't you post the job here. Surely there are a few expats that can
help you out with a quote. If the quote is right, then the job is done. You
have little worries and your boss will be satisfied. Easy!

I can help here if you still need a custom website. I'm a freelance website developer based in Canton Bern, Switzerland.

And affordable!

Can create basically anything you like, it all depends on the actual project required.

PM me your website project details and I can quote you directly.

Hope this helps,

I seem to know little about website building? And what exactly do you base that on? I'm curious to know.

I'll definitely use the online reference guides.

mjones, have you used the dummies book yourself?
PHP is the backbone of most content rich websites these days, I personally haven't built a site without it for years. But is very confusing at first and time consuming to do.

Its a completely different ball game to HTML, its like knowing french and thinking you can just pickup say japanese overnight, it won't happen just like that. HTML was the first real coding methd to build sites, very easy but limited in alot of ways, great though if you only need a few simple pages.

To create a good CMS site you'll need to understand and learn PHP (or maybe ASP), CSS, SQL, JS, Java, XML and definitely look at AJAX. AJAX is a new method I love to use on CMS sites, Facebook for example use it everywhere on their site, for example the search, as you type your results appear, its all amazing stuff! The current site I'm developing is using this all over the place.

The biggest difference for me is HTML can be built pretty easily with editors, so coding experience isn't essential, with PHP however almost everything is coded by hand, and the design/look with done with CSS, JS, AJAX etc, which again are all coded.

The other key factor is the database, SQL. It was something that used to give me a headache, but luckily a previous job I had involved alot of database scripting, mainly for realtime production and planning databases, more than I'll ever need for the web

So what M Jones is saying is probably right, the fact you don't understand PHP means your going to have to learn all over again, and it will take time

There is one way round it, look at CMS's like Joomla. Great starting point as most of the hard works been done! It 'll save you weeks

We may need a logo designed soon, was doing a little scouting and came across these guys - seems to be an affordable way for a start-up to get something basic going. Have not tried them yet.
