Shall I inform my employer that I will be self employed or be a owner of a company?

Hi all,

I saw several topics commenting it but It still not clear for me if it's mandatory or only recommended.

Best regards,
Jorge

Most employment contracts have some clause stating that you must inform your employer if you take on any other paying work or even a leadership position as a volunteer.

I just informed my employer, for example, that I will be opening a "power company" later this year to sell the energy produced by my new photo-voltaic panels on my new house. If you are concerned (possible conflict-of-interest complaints or something), have the letter signed by your company and keep a copy. Otherwise, it's usually enough just to inform them in writing.

Hope this helps.

Check your contract as it could be in there. If it is even remotely connected with your 'real' job then you can expect trouble. If it is totally unrelated then you should be ok.

As others said, check your contract, which should have a clause clarifying the matter. In my case, the contract specifically says that I am forbidden to carry out any and all activities connected to our business (i.e. the same or very similar work than what I do for my employer) on a self employment/independent basis.

I am however allowed to engage in activities on an independent basis that are not related to the field of my employer, and in any case upon written consent by my employer. Furthermore, these activities must not take up more than a certain percentage of the work week (I forget the % now), and in any case must not interfere with my regular job, and include working for a non-profit - I could, with written consent, only if the activity doesn't come close to what I do at my employer.

Thank you for the replies.

As far as I know I have no clause in my contract, it's page contract, but I guess that somewhere are the conditions.

The activity is not related one is insurance and another leasure so ...

But anyway, I will ask HHRR

Thank you. I was sure about it. My extra job doesn't have to have any impact in the current one.
