Starting up a Travel Agency

Hi Folks,

I am thinking about starting up a travel agency as I have very good contacts from where I am originally from (Relations have a reputed travel agency in the holiday destination)

I can organise custom made holiday packages for individuals as well as help anyone to get very good rates for Long Haul Flights (flight Bookings will be done by a partner travel agent in Switzerland for a special price)

Does anyone know if I need to have any special qualifications in order to register as a travel agent/ consultant?

If succesful I will offer special EF discounts as well

Thank you all

My idea is not about ticketing but for round tours, custom built tours and Ayurveda related holiday organisation.

You may find a small niche in the market, but honestly who uses a travel agent today? It's over 20 years since I made a trip to the shops and gave 10% to someone who knew less about where I was going than me...

I do not cover the whole world. Just two locations that I am specialized in. Therefore I know the places inside out - I grew up over there

It would mainly be online. However if someone needs to talk to me ref a custom made package they can call me or meet me on appointment.

Re: Starting up a Travel Agency

I use a travel agency in my town - why? - because I'm an oldie and should anything happen to me whilst I'm on my own somewhere I want someone to fall back on even if it's just relying on a representative of TUI or whatever it may be.

But, and I've asked around a lot - I'd like to find an organisation that specialises in reasonably/normally-priced long winter stays by the sea for people who are alone and would like to spend a few simple weeks in the sun. In my case luxury isn't necessary, just cleanliness and somewhere peaceful. I'm not hunting for a partner either. In November I was in Tenerife - Puerto de la Cruz, tiptop except that I was surrounded by couples so had very little opportunity to chat.

As an example I have the new catalogue from Dähler for Benidorm in winter; travel to Spain by coach and then a hotel for x weeks - but the offered hotels look horrible and aren't really worth the price. But if I could find a nice little place with a few other oldies staying (not B+B, I don't want to be locked out most of the day) with a nice room, peaceful, and near the sea for long walks then I'd be in a position to consider.

Niche maybe?

Thats the exact point. If you book online majority of times you do not get all the info you need (or no one to ask for it or a 0900 num etc)

I will be specializing in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and Maldives (Male). Both for round packaged tours and sun holidays (Male). I will also have a rep in both countries. Tailor made to suit your needs - all hotels used are from 3* to 5*

Re: Starting up a Travel Agency

I've been to Sri Lanka, lovely.

But you've missed the point of my need. I don't want to go to a hotel with stars where there are other couples - I want to go somewhere simple, clean, reasonable, with long walks and where there are other oldies on their own.

It always seems to be a difficult thing to understand - you are not alone.

I think that what you have in mind is to start is a Tour Operator rather than a Travel Agency

Re: Starting up a Travel Agency

I don't think you need qualifications to be a tour operator/travel consultant but you will probably need to join some associations.

Unless you can offer prices better than the other guys then you don't have a chance. Research is done on the internet so the need for specialist local knowledge (for a fee) is not necessary.

From a purely business view this is an industry to get out of and not in to.

Busby - find an operator who deals in holidays for retired people; as you can already see it's not what gamebuwa is offering. You also want everyone going to be single? Hmm. Good luck with the search.

And hotels that do reasonably priced single rooms.

Me ma (newly widowed) is going on a "singles" holiday for the same reasons as you.

Unfortunately for you it's from UK (though I think they're visiting Switzerland as part of the tour).

Thanks, I've searched for a long time for what I want but unless you pay the earth there's nothing sensible. But, I don't want 'single' people - being a widower and an oldie I just want to find a place where there are a few of us who roughly fit into this bracket and who can still walk without getting breathless.

I know it's not what gamebuwa offers (or wants to offer) my contribution was meant as a tip/hint/help to show that there are still niches around which aren't exploited to the full extent.
