Selling paintings online - how to set shipping costs from Switzerland?

Hey people, me and a friend are making a website to sell her paintings. We've been selling them locally now making a site.

They are all A3 size

The question I had is, how do we set this up in terms of pricing for shipping/postage and packaging?

Eg.

If a painting is say 100CHF

Then someone buys it online from USA or someone from UK or someone from India etc etc

How do we find out the pricing to these countries? Or how shall we set it?

Like I said, all paintings are A3 in size and just on canvas, no fancy extras like a frame etc

Ask at the local post office?

There might even be information at http://www.post.ch/en/post-startseite.htm

I haven't shipped outside Switzerland yet, but I imagine the process would be similar to here with a few extra details.

When determining pricing, include the costs for your packaging materials and the postage itself. If you're going to use the Swiss Post, you can calculate postage on the website based on size and weight. Consider whether you want to pay for some sort of signature delivery confirmation to protect you and the customer. You can either eat this cost or pass it on to the customer.

Make sure your customers know they are responsible for import duties (if applicable), and make sure you have the customs paperwork filled out correctly.

Have fun!

Hi guys, just following up on this

I checked this site - http://www.post.ch/en/post-startseit...detail_eingabe

For example I want to sell a A3 sized poster to someone in the USA, I chose MAXI LETTER - 500g weight

It tells me - 18CHF for Economy? Is that true? That's so expensive!

Re: Selling paintings online - how to set shipping costs from Switzerland?

I recently sent an unframed 35 x 25 cm painting to someone in the US, packed between two sheets of thick cardboard, and was charged 18 CHF economy rate. The Swiss Post website quoted 25 to 30 days' delivery time but it only took 10 days in reality.

Note: this was not merchandise; I was sending it to a friend as a present, so the rules may be different. And of course if the picture is framed, it becomes a totally different question - definitely not a "maxi letter" any more .

I don't think it is... imagine all the handling work involved in sending something of those dimensions without damaging it.

Re: Selling paintings online - how to set shipping costs from Switzerland?

It is true, and it is pricey. It has to do with the size of your painting.

If you could make them a little smaller (A4 for example) you could then opt for the B4 post option up to 100 g, and then the economy rate is only CHF 4.20.

Otherwise you might be better off shipping in Europe only.

Well no offense meant here, but that's not bad at all. I'm an artist myself and if you can guess...I make ships in bottles and I send them all over the world. Be glad you aren't sending parcels. I pay 150 chf at least by post...don't even think about a parcel service here I also make lots of other artwork too and have experience with multiple websites.

And, just as a side note for the future, you may want to include the option of framing, of course with an increase of price in shipping, but that's just an idea and customers often like that option.

Most every good sized post office should have a pamphlet with prices for sending letters and parcel all over the world. It gives all the country codes and weights for any package/letter you want to send, as well as the length of time it takes, so you know exactly how much you will be paying. It is incredibly handy, so I would suggest asking for one of those. You never know when a customer may ask for a custom piece of artwork, and online, they want responses to questions like, "how much for shipping?" right away.

Also, on your site make sure you at least let customers know that they are responsible for any customs fees, so you don't have unhappy costumers and they know what's coming. That probably doesn't apply for letters, but it's safe to add anyway.

I'd like to see your friend's artwork. Is your site up and running yet? Pictures please!
