Run my accounts accounting software

I have been recommended runmyaccounts.com for Swiss online bookkeeping incl MWST ...

There is a YouTube video explaining it ... Anyone used it ? Or thoughts about such a system?

Or alternatives?

Lisa

Re: Run my accounts accounting software

I'm still considering that too. I can't seem to find anyone using either system :-). I use Quickbooks Pro but need to upgrade.

Runmyaccounts is a Swiss system as is Amanda, both online.

All views welcome.

Re: Run my accounts accounting software

These people have been doing accounting software for the Swiss market for ages (they're a spin-off from the EPFL) : http://epsitec.ch. Might float your boat?

Re: Run my accounts accounting software

Using an online accounting system is not a very good idea if you have any business secrets to keep secret (and I can't think of a business which doesn't), this should now be clear to everyone at least since the recent NSA internet monitoring revelations.

In fact I would not even trust any accountant that uses Windows PCs to handle customer data, as it's now clear that Windows cannot be trusted due to the intentional backdoors it has.

My accountant mentioned about having the data on the cloud. I've been meaning to talk to him about it!

Windows not being trustable. I'll take that with a pinch of salt, if I may.

If they implement security properly, they are hard to penetrate. I don't know whether Abacus is brilliant or crazy but their online offering is with SuisseID and uses Java applets. Or you can use your iPad.

If I was going to attack this, I'd go for the client and not the server.

Let's not forget you might want to not have your Swiss data outside Switzerland. Data protection for you and your clients is important.

This has been a known fact for almost 14 years now (note the date of the article I linked to), but IIRC it was also recently confirmed again by one of the leaked Snowden documents.

I'm not saying that using Apple is any safer, as it's a US company I'd guess the NSA has the same kind of backdoor access to Apple operating systems as to Microsoft ones. The only safe solution is using open source software such as Linux.

I beg to differ, servers are almost always preferred targets as they contain far more interesting data than individual clients.

oh I agree but if a service is put up facing the Internet with consideration, designed properly and pentested and scanned regularly, the client will be the weakest link.

sadly not everyone takes that approach. Some famously failing....

The problem is you have no way of knowing if your online accountancy service provider is running a well secured server or not, that's why I wouldn't trust any online accounting service.

From experience (I have almost 20 years of Unix sysadmin/systems engineer experience) I can say that the wast majority of online services don't care about security at all, all they care about is spending as little as possible for their IT so they can maximise their profits.

I am looking primarily at Swiss solutions ... located on Swiss servers :-) I'm therefore moving away from QB which is a US product - although I've never used their online version.

Don't even pharmaceutical companies and banks use clouds? eg Windows 360 - they have more secrets (and secrets from US competitors) than I do.

I like the idea of being able to access from home/work/client. It's time for me to move forward.

I don't believe it is, Sage have a Cloud solution (Sage One?) and Amanda seems to be a small Swiss company.

Only drawback I've found so far is it's not possible to customise your invoice layouts too much, logo size etc, but they have said they are working on that.

Great! I probably should do that too ... Does it require a lot of work to set up (for the trial?).

Really looking forward to hearing what you think

Most accounts are already set up, you just need to enter your "catalogue" - product and service codes etc, and a client/supplier list. We're just doing some invoices for a couple of bigger clients at the mo, if it all goes well we'll move over completely by September or October.
