What business to start in Bern?

I want to start a new business for My wife, she is quiting her job because of our first new born baby. But really, have no idea what should we start. It has to be a coffee shop, Kiosk kind of business. We are living in Bern and have around 20 K of savings. any suggestions? Thanks

Re: What business to start in Bern?

Here are a couple of links to help:

https://www.ch.ch/en/becoming-self-employed/

http://www.kmu.admin.ch/themen/00614...x.html?lang=en

But frankly if you expect her to look after a newborn and run a full time business I think you're crazy, especially if it's your first child. Take time to be parents first.

Re: What business to start in Bern?

Well this is what she wants, I just let her do what she feel happy about.
Btw we are just planning for it. She would definitely not do anything until baby is about 6 months old. She wants a work where she can actually keep baby with her and work.

Having a baby is pretty much full-time work. But I wish you luck, you are very optimistic!

Re: What business to start in Bern?

I agree. We are having her parents over to help us taking care of baby. Plus there must be a type of business where you could keep your baby with you for few hours until I get back from my work.

Re: What business to start in Bern?

Try and delay the decision until the baby is 6 months old. I am sure she will see things differently then!

As an idea, you can make good money by looking after 3 or 4 small children, as well as your own. I expect she would need vetting first and the premises inspected.

Do you not think that Bern has enough coffee shops and kiosks? Is there really any room for another business?

Re: What business to start in Bern?

I think yes, there are enough. but again competition is in almost everything these days. Right now we do not have a good three four room house to actually take couple of kids and look after,, however, it is good idea.
Is there any website outlining minimum requirements to have a child care housing service started?

thx

You'd have to ask permission from your landlord/agency though.

Re: What business to start in Bern?

I was thinking there is some room for a Mr. Minit type of business (have been looking for a place to have a shoe repaired at reasonable prices), but they seem to have three locations in Bern in fact. Maybe there is room for more? Though my bet is it would require more than 20k of investment.

Re: What business to start in Bern?

Starting a business takes a lot of time, effort, energy, and money. Having a newborn takes a lot of time, effort, energy, and money. Personally, I'd just focus on the latter, as these next few months will fly by for you and your wife.

By the time you get any business up and running, baby will be here and you may have put in all that effort only to have to let the business slide because neither of you has time or energy for it.

Oh, and expect that getting set up for baby could eat a quarter of the savings you mention just for starters. Then there's all the stuff (read: expenses) that comes after your bundle of joy arrives.

Also, in another thread you ask about your wife getting unemployment money once she has the baby. She has to be available to work and have child care arranged. I'm not sure how available she'd be if she's running a start-up and adjusting to life as a new mom.

Wishing you the best! Such an exciting time for you both!

If you are unemployed, and looking to start your own business, Un1a WILL pay you to venture into that for up to 3 months, maybe 6, but you have to ask the RAV or Un1a.

If you are thinking of a coffee kind of place, in tandem with your new situation, I think if you can find a big enough space, pairing a child's play room, next to a coffee room would be an excellent idea. I have seen this work in St Etienne and near Zurich with great success.

But if you set up a coffee shop remember there are a lot of high expenses to consider, including machine maintenance, certain required machine and water line cleanings, and possibly need to be sanitation certified if you will be handling food. Remember to use confection ovens instead of gas ones, as ventilation reqs are vastly different. If you are interested to know more, send me a pm. But be warned, you won't go far at all on 20k, unless you are very creative, motivated, and a million plus other things.

She is quitting her job because you have a newborn baby but starting a new business instead? That should be less stressful then

They do not provide funds for a start up. But they will pay you unemployment, to not search for work(like it is required), but instead start you own business.

How are you going to talk to your customers, the authorities, the neighbours?

You need to understand what is expected of you, http://www.jgk.be.ch/jgk/de/index/ki...bereich_de.pdf

Re: What business to start in Bern?

Forgive my negativity, but with a retail business in a location with a descent footfall you'll probably burn through 20k on the day you sign the lease. Quarterly rent in advance, deposit, legals and insurance will eat that no problem. The child care idea could be a flyer though.

Re: German you'll need to be near fluent or have a fluent employee for any business.
