Do you know if I need a special permit to open a little snack bar?

The exact requirements vary from kanton to kanton but as a minimum you would need to inform the local food and health department (Kantonales Amt fur Lebensmittelkontrolle) who would most likely carry out an inspection (which you pay for). You need to maintain records such that the food supply chain can be readily identified.

If you are preparing food on site then the requirements may become heavier - formal training may be required. If you are selling alcohol you may also need a license for this from either a related Kanton office or the Kantonal police.

A good starting point for finding out what you need is the Federal Office of Public Health who will point you at your local contacts. Information on the Public Health Act (in English, how good is that?) can be found here.

My wife and I have been planning to start a business selling peri peri chicken etc. from a mobile van. We have been talking about this for a few years now, but we were waiting for me to complete my renovations to my house first.
Probably, in summer we will really start to pursue our dream.
I would also be interested in how I would go about finding a location to be able to sell from. Also, the rough costs to the Gemeinde.

I suppose there will be an element of "environment health" issues.
Would be interested in any information to kick start us off in our venture. I understand that dream to reality will not be as easy as I would like, however I do have the experience in Barrow in Furness (UK) where my ex girlfriend and myself setup a Thai / malaysian restaurant / guesthouse and ran it for ten years.

Hi Mate,
I think it works better if you ask specific questions then it's easier for folk to respond with specific answers should they have the knowledge.

Regarding the Gemeinde pitch questions, my understanding of the local mentality is that you'd have to approach it along the lines of "...there used to be a van selling chicken on this busy road/turnoff every Tuesday (or whenever Güggelitag was in your area) haven't seen anyone there, is the pitch free?" If not you follow up with your own proposals where you think you could pull it off.

Just my 2 Rp. but then I probably haven't a clue!

I am thinking of putting up a store, combining handicrafts and offering homemade juices and cakes. As simple as that :)

Where are you're homemade juices and cakes being made - if that isn't a completely silly question?

We are thinking of a snack bar, where we can make the smoothies on the spot (where customers can directly see, how they are made). The customers can either take them away or find a place to sit inside or outside the store. The cakes and other homemade snacks, we can cook them at home, since putting up a stove in the store is also another cost.:)These are just plans right now.

Not sure you can just make cakes at home... You are getting into much more complicated waters there. I think you need a brevet (certification). You might want to consider selling cakes made by a professional bakery.

You'll need to get the store and your kitchen inspected seperately then.

I get the impression that the regulations in CH make it very difficult for entrepreneurs to set up their own little bars/restos/takeaway/etc. For example in Zürich a lot of the bars and restaurants that are being set up are backed by big business enterprises such as Höschgass gastro AG (Yooji's, Iroquois, Nooba, Bohemia, Cheyenne, Toto, Rush) and Candrian Catering AG (Brasserie Lipp, The Lion bar, Bona Dea, Jules Verne, plus 18 places in the Hauptbahnhof alone), and they have tonnes of cash to spend on a venture. I think mom and pop places are quite rare. I spent 12 years of my life in Amsterdam where setting up a bar/cafe is a lifestyle, and many entrepreneurs do so, I get the impression it's not like that here. Besides, in a year or so there will be a bloody %&*! Starsucks on every corner.

I think you have a point but it's not the regulations that are at fault, rather it's the expense involved, mainly rents. In my experience to date the regulations are no more onerous than those of the UK. If you are going to be involved in the supply of prepared food then you must expect a high degree of regulation and also expect to keep good records so when people start dropping like flies it can be traced back to the source :D.

I believe it's down to economics rather than regulations.

My experience of opening and running an open air bar a few Summers ago was nothing but positive; the authorities are particularly helpful and will do what they can to get your project off the ground. They'll also be somewhat lenient if it's clear you're a newbie and you screw up somewhere - they give you a few chances to get things right. Do it by the book and they'll be your best friends :)

I saw a breakfast van at one university. Every morning he pulls up sells baked goods and beverages. Also, saw a falafel van at the same university. Perhaps they belong to something bigger and I just didnt realize it.

I've often thought what's needed in Zurich is a decent sandwich bar. Somewhere that you can go in and ask for a nice roll with some ham AND cheese maybe even with a little tomato, lettuce, egg and some relish thrown on for good measure... and no bl00dy gherkin! Make that to go or to eat in, throw a few cheese and onion crisps on the side and hey presto!!!

Maybe this does exist but I have not yet found a decent sandwich place here in Switzerland. They all seem to have a choice of one filling with that god aweful gherkin thrown in. :msnsick:

Hi everybody,

I am Lipika. I was hoping to start an Indian take away in Zurich somewhere around Niederdorfstrasse. I dont have any idea about the permits required and how i can get the cook from India.

Can somebody help.
