Re: door to door sell

I have never had anyone come to my door trying to sell anything in the ten years I have been in CH.
Telephone selling is another story - people seem to ring my home on almost a daily basis - I wish this was illegal

Re: door to door sell

There were people from Cablecom trying this last year (?) when they were doing a big promo push. They came to my building and rang every apartment trying to get in.

Once had some Jehovah's Witnesses from the States trying to push The Watchtower in my face while speaking horrible German. Boy were they shocked when I told them (in my crudest American English) where they could put their magazine.
Other than that and one or two charity drives I've never really been bothered by any kind of door-to-door sales people in my 20+ years here. Remember most people live in apartment buildings and it's not easy to get into the main door to the stairway.

If you do not wish to receive advertising mail or phone calls, you may opt to have an advertising ban placed on your listing (marked by an asterisk). Just ask Swisscom for more information.

Re: door to door sell

My door attracts opposites, too – Telecomunication companies and charities During my childhood I remember also at least one gypsie who asked if we have scissors and knifes to sharp.

Door to door sells are legal and there apparently are a couple companies who successfully sell goods and not just contracts to regular customers, although I haven't encountered them in my door frame.

But there are special laws to protect the customers from these salesmen. A customer can void a contract he signed in seven days.

Re: door to door sales

My home is my sanctuary of peace and tranquility, if I want to buy something I go to the shop. I do not want the shop to come to me...

I hope there are laws against door to door peddling, to be quite frank I get the urge to when people try to push their wares/religion onto me whilst in my sanctuary.

Before deciding on a door-to-door career ask yourself the question: "How many people are genuinely happy to have me appear on their doorstep?" The answer is obvious: none.

Yep, we had one. Our local farmer, selling potatoes and apples :-)

We bought some - yum, fresh.

All sales people decidedly unwelcome at my door or phone. When I'm finished with them, they never call again. Please don't even suggest the idea.

Re: door to door sales

had two saleswomen ring the downstairs door today. I didn't really understand what they were up to on the telecom but I was able to tell them that I wasn't interested in supposedly saving 20 CHF/month with Sunrise over Cablecom.

What a horrible job to have to do!

We have it. It's called "Billag". Really friendly people. It takes just a stick to get rid of them.

No it is not popular in Switzerland. Apart from the Local Farmer selling his produce.

If you are thinking about doing it, how many languages do you have, as you would need Swiss Deutsch, French, Italian & others.

Re: door to door sales

Just another question: maybe now I am paranoid...

Is it really safe to buzz in people you don't know? I mean, someone says they are from "Billag" or "Sunrise" or "Swisscom" and you open the downstairs door.

I think I won't answer the door buzzer anymore when I am home alone unless it is for sure the Post Paketi man (I know him well )

Anyone selling door-to-door needs a permit in CH.

Tell that to all the foreigners who knock on my door, trying to sell me teatowels, etc. They have their little card in French/German (because they don't speak the language) which they show when I open the door. I say no thank you (in my limited French) and they go away again. Numbers vary, but average 2/3 a year. I'd be very surprised if they have any sort of permit to sell door-to-door.

So maor, I guess you can see from the comments here that door to door selling doesn't look to be very popular with us foreigners.

By the way, has anyone tried putting up a "no cold callers please" sign (in language of your choice) to see if that puts them off?

Re: door to door sales

The permits are issued by the Gemeinde / Commune. If you get door to door callers, ask to see their permit. Close the door and call the police.

We pay for social services in Switzerland, begging is not necessary. These people are usually illegal visitors, and are controlled by organised gangs.

Re: door to door sales

Yes, I got that impression Sbrinz, because the handwriting on the card always looks the same. Can't think what the gangs get out of it particularly because I doubt their "clients" are earning much if their sales (not) to me are anything to go by. Maybe they get paid before the poor dupes get shipped here.

Re: door to door sales

Sometimes these illegals are reporting which apartments are empty, then the thieves arrive and clean out the richer looking homes.
