Accounting software for mac

Hi everybody,
I am looking for a cheap (or free) simple accounting software for mac / that serves well a small startup, online shop accounting requirements
As a mac user I got used to beautiful layeouts and can't tolerate badly made systems.

The days of locally-installed accounting software are pretty much over, so it doesn't make any difference which operating system your device happens to use.

I use Xero for one company and Kashflow for another. Kashflow is simpler and has a smarter user-interface, but Xero has some handy extra features such as multi-currency banking. Horses for courses - there are quite a few systems available, so you need to do some research to find out which one suits your business. Mostly they charge monthly, but they will give you a generous trial periods. Some may even have a free "lite" version - don't know.

I'd be interested to know how you're getting on with Xero. I've just changed over and they gave me an extra month's trial before billing. I like it a lot so far, even though it's far from the cheapest, and there is now a Xero partner in CH. One of the things I like is that it's not too geared to the UK or US tax systems

We have been using it for a year, and only minor niggles so far. We haven't been through a year-end yet, but I don't anticipate any problems. We originally started with Kashflow, but quickly switched to Xero for its multi-currency-feature, and this is very powerful, albeit unobtrusive. We showed it to a Swiss auditor and he couldn't get his head around the fact that all the donkey-work which is normally involved in dealing with historical exchange rates was being done automatically. One thing that I miss is the ability to import bank statements for reconciliation, but maybe this has been solved if there's a Swiss Xero partner - please could you provide details?

Re: Accounting software for mac

I forgot to mention an important detail:

I need this for accounting in Switzerland
plus
I would happily start with a simple program, but later in case I wanted to do difficult tasks, than I should be able to get extras, or update or more difficult version of this program.

So what is the new recommendation for the swiss accounting but international business?

Economacs is a nice program, it is very easy to use. Trial is free and I think full version was about 90 euro. I use it myself for my not-so-big business. It has the "Mac-look".

If you need it to work to Swiss standards in Swiss currency you may want to have a look at Sage One. It's online so not on your machine, at 19. CHF per month (not free but not very expensive either). Caution, I understand it doesn't handle other currencies than CHF.

Re: Accounting software for mac

Hi all - does anyone know if Xero adheres to swiss standards for accounting and VAT? i.e. can I use only this system for my accountiing and VAT for my GmbH in Switzerland (we are not required to have audits) but have accounts signed off at end of the year.

Advice appreciated.

So long as you properly code and classify your transactions, including for VAT, Xero and any other accounting systems from recognized international software providers should be able to support your business in Switzerland. Accounting software from Swiss software companies may have advantages for e-banking with Swiss banks and also preparation of VAT filings.

Re: Accounting software for mac

in the case you use an accountant or fiduciaire to do your year-end work you may consider to talk to them first. They would normally already use a system and sometimes have an open portal for you to use. If any trouble arises they have access to your accounts and the year end work will be faster (and cheaper).

This I would recommend if you are not a talent in book keeping as you would loose so much time searching for things.

Thank you Tom, the multi currency feature is massively important as a timesaver. That is if you have imports or services outside of Switzerland of course..

Run My Accounts offers a free plan: https://www.runmyaccounts.ch/gratis-...accounts-free/

(It's cloud software, so not Mac software per se.)

I use it exclusively. There is now an accountant specialising in Xero in Switzerland, he's in Basel

Can Kashflow be used in Switzerland?

P.S. I've used it for many years in UK and I liked it a lot!

Re: Accounting software for mac

Have a look at Banana version 8. It is a CH accounting software (Lugano based company) that works on Mac/PC/Linux. I have not used it myself but you can download a trial version to test it.

You may want to look here: https://www.postfinance.ch/en/priv/p...fo/advice.html

Shakehands is freeware. Don't know if its for the mac or not. Tried it once but found the logic not to my liking.

Used Quicken on the mac years ago but that's American based.
