| | Re: Thinking of starting a Fried Chicken Business like KFC | Quote: | | | | | It was here for 24 years... 1980 - 2004.... that's a long time to try and make something work.
I would say the problems here are: - Price of locally sourced chicken along with all other high Swiss operating costs
- KFC use chicken farms where the chucks live in crappy conditions and are pumped full of rubbish in order to be able to fatten quickly enough to be someones meal. I'm guessing that doesn't fly in Switzerland, especially nowadays.
- KFC have a worse global reputation for bad health and hygiene that McDonalds et al
So, you would need to find a local chicken farm that was willing to provide chicken at a low cost, and provide enough to fuel several busy stores. | | | | | yes, all good points but 1980 - 2004 is a long time ago so I think there is an opportunity for a second shot.
I would consider an investment in a KFC franchise if the plan made sense.......

Chicken prices probably haven't got any cheaper, and Switzerland is likely less tolerant of poor animal conditions than 10 years ago... so not sure how those things could have changed since they were last here.

| | Re: Thinking of starting a Fried Chicken Business like KFC | Quote: | | | | | ...why model yourself after the worlds most successful fried chicken chain? Let me think about that... | | | | | Well, by that logic, a burger place would only be successful if they made soggy limp cheeseburgers, because that's what McDonalds' success is based on. Or every car company should make a Toyota Corrolla clone because it's the bestselling car of all time.
"Success" is defined differently for gigantic global chains than it is for a small local restaurant, and in the US KFC and it's family of terrible "restaurants" have been rapidly losing market share to competitors, only to refocus efforts on countries that either love anything American or have questionable culinary tastes.
So, if the OP wants to imitate the success of KFC, she should start by opening 5000 locations in China, and 1000 or so in the UK. Assuming her capital doesn't cut it though, she may just want to focus on making a better, tastier product.
Not to mention the obvious, namely that KFC tried already tried here, and failed, so clearly it doesn't resonate with the Swiss consumer. The main appeal of KFC in the US is that it's dirt cheap, and you can't duplicate that here...

a 14 piece bargain bucket plus 4 fries is £16.09 = chf 25.00 so your chf 50.00 is a good guess for the price adapted for CH. it would feed 4.5 adults so chf 11 per head. Finger licking value for money, I'd say

I've seen many many copies of KFC in many countries and have not eaten in any of them.
To me - they all look like cheap copies of KFC, they all look a little dirty like a dirty backstreet kebab shop with red and white logos.
I think they mostly just look like cheap rip-off places. Yeah there are other burger places but they usually don't try to copy MacD or BK. They normally do it different like gourmet burgers or nice environment or table service or beer etc.
So why do most KFC copycats try to actually copy the KFC model and look?

It's probably long gone though as they have the real thing there now.

Sounds familiar? The case for re-introducing KFC to Switzerland | Quote: | | | | | Speaking just about the UK, fried chicken has seen a huge resurgence in popularity this last decade. In my old stomping grounds of NW London I counted no less than 14 fried chicken joints in a half mile radius.. in that same radius there is a single post office
My guess is that British Yoot and Swiss Yoot are not that dissimilar. | | | | | |

The main appeal of KFC in the US is that it's dirt cheap, and you can't duplicate that here... | | | | | Success at a basic level can simply be measured by profit, for businesses both large and small. Without profit to continue existing and making effort worthwhile, a business is not free to do other things it really wants to do. It's the equivalent of man needing to find a reliable source of food before he can turn his attentions to more civilized pursuits and then start evolving.
The McDonalds reference is completely irrelevant, they use completely different produce and supply chains, as well as being consistently popular.
