Thinking of starting a Fried Chicken Business like KFC

Just wondering why it has not been done yet. Any idea? Would it work? Would you be my customer? Any views?

I know about healthy eating trends and blablabla but the Burger King and McDonald are always full. Plus, the KFC's car park in Singen is often full of ZH number plates.

Thanks for your replies.

It has been done, it failed.

People who want great fried chicken go to Pouletburg.

Well, yeah, it's been done. A fried chicken business like KFC -- to be specific, it was called KFC -- opened up in Switzerland a while back.

It failed.

I'm sure it can work. There are more foreigners here these days and the younger Swiss kids I'm sure would be more open to it. The only issue is that KFC is limited to chicken only whereas McD and BK serve burgers and chicken.

I know KFC used to be here but nowhere could I found why they pulled out. Any idea? In any case, this happened years ago, right?

Are you not able to type "KFC" into the search function? :)

Anyway, I think it could work as a small business if it was in a good location... the only problem would be getting your produce cheap enough, as I don't think it would work without the chicken being swiss-sourced. However, startup costs would probably be very high, and to me from your first couple of posts it seems like you don't know too much about the business, or at least haven't done your research.

Seems we are getting a lot of "I want to start X business, what do I need to do?" threads lately.

The bosses names were Sam and Ella - probably didn't help.

Mobile chicken vans seem to work better - but of course they are missing the secret recipe coating.
Do you have the secret recipe?

I have done lot of research nowhere could I find why KFC pulled out. It would be helpful if you could tell me why.

Plus you will be amazed to know that I also have a business plan. Just wanted to have people's view before taking the next steps

Will get a copycat of that secret, not so secret recipe. There are so many of these shops in the U, getting that is a piece of ...cake

Personally I don't know what the fuss is about with takeaway chicken in general, and KFC in particular - it's all a it bland.

If you want to do something with chicken, that's more unique, then something along the lines of 'Pollo al Adeje' might work better.

The only fast food type chicken that is worth paying money for.

How much research have you done on the topic?

Things to consider:
- Location: Where will you have your EFC (Elodi Fried Chicken)? What is the expected rental cost of the location? Opening hour limitation? Parking? Drive-thru etc
- Staffing costs: Take the number of hours open per week * by the number of staff per hour * 40chf (including uniform and all deductions)
- Unit costs: How much will it cost per item in ingredients?
- Competition: What other offerings are there in the area? MaccyD? BK? Established Imbiss?

You'll quickly find that labour/rental costs will mean your selling price is going to be quite high. Compare the cost of a meal at MaccyD in Switzerland to the UK - take that ratio add 20% because of your lack in buying power and you may come close to the cost here.

Then reduce the market size - and see if you can get the numbers to stack up.

I can't be bothered doing the research, but I understood that the KFC/Pizza Hut franchise owners failed because their business practices weren't the best.

In any case, I don't think the Pizza Hut side of the business was exactly a great investment in a country that prefers proper pizza.

KFC is unique and unlike pizza restaurants would have very little competition. According to their website they have outlets in 115 countries so there is no reason why it can't work in CH. Like all business what's important is the execution of the idea and it would need an experienced franchise operator with knowledge of the Swiss market.

In that case, KFC failed in CH for no reason.

Maybe all those years back there were few foreigners here. But now it might be a success. I for one miss a good KFC zinger.

KFC pulled out of Switzerland in 2004, when 20.56% of the Swiss population were "registered resident foreigners" -- that's just over 1.5 million. Enough to sustain a fried chicken outlet, one would have thought.

You stated that there was no reason for KFC not to work in Switzerland, I pointed out that it hadn't worked, therefore basic logic dictates that the reason why KFC did not work in CH was <null>.

Nothing perverse there. :)

KFC and Taco Bell are owned by the same company.

I have visited a combined KFC and Taco Bell, where you order KFC one end of the counter, and on the other end you order Taco Bell.

Hedge your bets, and bring in two fast food franchises for the price of one.

This is such a great idea that I am willing to invest :)
