Etsy type products in Switzerland

Hi,
I am planning to make some jewelry, crafts, furniture stuffs, and wonder do I need a license to sell them?
What are the steps?
I am not planning a business yet, just working on making some money when I am in school.

Check whether you're allowed to do this sort of thing under your student permit. Yes, you are allowed to work up to 15 hours a week, but usually you have to be employed by a Swiss employer, not self-employed, which is why you have to apply for a work permit when you find a part time job. Check with the migration office to make sure.

Thank you!
I read around the forum and little bit, and saw that self-employed are not allowed for international students. :-(

Re: Etsy type products in Switzerland

I used it briefly. When it started out it was a good site but now it is full of mass produced stuff & copyright violations so I don't recommend it to anyone. The main market is the USA from what I have seen. If you try to sell stuff you will need to be prepared to do overseas despite the high postage rates.

Re: Etsy type products in Switzerland

Thank you for the tips! But which commun are u talking about? The only problem I have is kick starting this hobby and getting attention. So basically advertising. That's always the hardest!

But you are right, it is a hobby and wish perhaps it can get into something bigger. I need to come up with ideas...

Commune = municipality. If you're in Zurich city, then it will be your local Kreisburo. If you're in Zurich canton then it's wherever municipality you have registered for your permit.

One way to gain exposure is to rent or share a stall at one of the local markets, or convince a local retailer to sell your items on consignment. In terms of online places, you can advertise for free on Tutti.ch or you can pay a small fee on Ricardo. I am not sure if the other free sites like RonOrp have a jewelry section or not. Of course you can also advertise on EF when you qualify, provided you continue to contribute to discussion sections as well.

Hope that helps and good luck.

Thank you! Actually I don't sell jewelry, more like gift baskets and more precisely unique baby shower gifts. So it's very niche. I doubt a stall would work. Consignment would work but what store would take those sort of things. I check out some baby stores and they make diaper cakes but really not nice ones.

I check out the tutti website and will have to look further into it. If you have any other ideas that would help too. I live in Zurich city. It's really hard to deal with the kreis buro because any information you collect is in German. I'm only bilingual English and French and wish they had info in French but they don't.

This is a small shop on Seefeldstasse - close to Höschgasse. You can rent a "Fach" - a space to show your things - and they will sell it for you. They always have very pretty things, I've been a customer there.

Re: Etsy type products in Switzerland

Thank you for that tip marischi. I looked at their site and shall certainly contact them for rental of a box. There is a similar shop in Rüti ZH called "Mauckis" where one can bring your stuff, she sells and takes a certain percentage of the sales. I have bought a few things there myself already.

I have to mention that I have no affiliation to any of the shops or sites I recommend on EF. Am also just a member trying to sell and would be glad if anybody has success in selling handmade stuff as I personally know how frustrating it is to spend hours and even money to produce somthing and you cant sell it at the end of the day

Re: Etsy type products in Switzerland

Hi welwitschia, it has been some time since you last post. I have similar idea in my head. I have access to some handmade products like hand-painted mugs, and Christmas decorations or even small ceramic figures. Question is how to advertise it here in Switzerland.
Have you tried eventually renting box or posting on ansalia? How did it go?

Re: Etsy type products in Switzerland

Has anyone else done this? I'm a Swiss national and curious about small scale craft selling but not sure what permits etc. would be required.
