Great in theory, until you realise that one half of the deal consists entirely of university level mathematics and books in Irish!

Yeah... We have the same problem. The Mr. only has IT books in his shelves, and some advanced physics just because.

Then he comes and complains he can't read my books because he finds history of the Mesopotamian valley boring.

After 10 years I think he's still trying to finish the Name of the Rose.

Same here. Mine are mostly sci-fi/fantasy fiction which he doesn't read and his are mostly military, film, photography related which I don't want to read.

Frankly I was amazed when we put our two collections together that we only had one duplicate amongst the thousand or so books we have.

I'm glad that it worked out with our music collection! We actually have similar taste in music (well, we had to have some things in common...) and we only had 2 duplicates (though my Mutter was the international special edition, his was the German special edition).

One thing he actually enjoys is audio books. I don't know why, but I never really enjoyed audio books - even with great voices. There's just something about holding a big chunk of paper that allows me to immerse into another dimension, but with audio books I just get bored after a while... Same thing with electronic books - I keep jumping lines when I'm reading in the tablet. Also, there's nothing more beautiful than a gorgeous library. <3

His tastes are different from mine on music although a lot of what he has I've enjoyed once I listened to it and he's the same for my music collection.

I tried audio books a while ago, but didn't really enjoy them. I think it's because when you read a book you mentally pronounce the words a certain way and the audio never quite matches re emphasis or phrasing.

My SIL loves audio books. Tried it once and caught myself picking up another book to read....

Old fashioned paper books and yes, also an e-reader, are great things. I finally fulfilled my dream of having a separate room with all my books :-)

Our reading tastes overlap but also diverge quite wildly. He's an audiobook fan. We both buy both eBooks - the convenience! - and book books, new and second hand.

Ours, too, is a mixed marriage.

He reads prolifically across the sciences, I read everything but. Ne'er the twain shall meet.

Our most pressing problem after almost 30 years o' martial bliss is that we are now out of walls against which to put bookshelves. That's one factor in our decision to leave Switzerland - forget downsizing in retirement, we need more space for the books!

But thin our respective libraries? Heavens, I don't think even the best of marriage counsellors would be equipped to guide us through that trauma.

But back to the OPs question: No, not interested in an app (or whatever) that would find a book cheaper. New or used, books are a spontaneous purchase.

After all, if we had any ability to exercise some literary self control we wouldn't be in this mess.

Being a fast reader, I find audio boks tedious.

And annoying if, as is sometimes the case, bits have been left out.

(Don't you start the hygiene discussion ) but we have an Astrophysics book as a 'bog read'... With nothing else in the vicinity, the book is actually getting read.

Most of my family (and I) have several books in that specific room :-) You never know when you might have a longer session and need something to read

Hi,

- Do you buy books regularly? Paper or eBook?

- Will you wait some weeks to see if a book of your interest will have a reduced price somewhere, provided you would be notified immediately of such discount? How much would you wait?

Many thanks
Best
People just check Amazon or similar sites. Really, don't waste your valuable time developing anything like this for books.

I buy almost exclusively electronic or used. I can't even remember the last time I bought a new paper book.

Personally I tried reading a normal book the other day and narrowly escaped, despite having adaptive cruise control, from driving off the road.

Since then I've gone back to audio books.

- Yes, paper (95%)

- Depends on how much interest I have*, if I really need it or I am really curious I just buy it. If it's something more like "Hmm, I think this book is interesting, I'll add it on my list" then of course I can wait a couple of weeks, even longer.

*I'm not referring (only) to bestsellers here. Although sometimes yes, I am attracted to this frenzy...

I really can't figure out how these answers can help you in any way, what's the purpose of this mini-survey if I may ask?

Re: If you buy books, will you wait some time to see a discount on a book of interest

Did you have in mind some sort of app that would show you where a book you're interested in is being sold and at what price, the way it exists for gas stations and probably many other consumption items? If so I doubt it'd catch on, as the folks who buy their books online are probably already doing that, and the folks who don't probably would not use your app.
