If you buy books, will you wait some time to see a discount on a book of interest?

Hi,

- Do you buy books regularly? Paper or eBook?

- Will you wait some weeks to see if a book of your interest will have a reduced price somewhere, provided you would be notified immediately of such discount? How much would you wait?

Many thanks
Best

I won't wait for a discount. At most I'd look for used in amazon

I guess? Both.

Maybe? Depends.

Sometimes it's easier to get a conversation started if you give your viewpoint and then ask others about theirs. Just sayin'

Re: If you buy books, will you wait some time to see a discount on a book of interest

I order them regularly.

Paper form - I like the smell of dead plant life in my hands.

Would I be interested in waiting if it means a discount? Most likely not - I order my books because I want/need them now. If the shop already tells me order time is over 2 weeks, I most likely will look for an alternative.

Now, if you ask Helm circa 1998, just getting inside the university and without two pennies to rub together, she'd probably wait for some discount on the ridiculous prohibitive price for university books.

Given that OP posted this in business/entrepreneur, I'd say we're the guinea pigs for his app development ideas. Fine I guess, but a please or thanks and a bit more info about why would come across as more friendly as opposed to throwing out generic questions to crowd-source ideas.

Sorry, I've got my grumpy hat on today, so I'll get me coat and head out into the sunshine now.

If I haven't thanked enough in the question, thanks again

Based on the responses, whatever that idea was is now dead

I've stopped buying books since one landed on my head.

I only have my shelf to blame.

Thanks. Maybe the first question was not that sensible :-/

I was wondering whether the book-reading community is actually interested in making an effort to find a book for a cheaper price or they just buy what they want as early as possible!

People do and people don´t.

In some countries there is a so called "Buchpreisbindung" which means the price for that book is fixed. You may get an english translation cheaper in the US for example but if you want a book in German in Germany you run into that fixed price again.

I usually only buy books when they've been out for a good while so they've normally been reduced anyway.

The book I'm reading now was written over 70 years ago so I'm not really a Bestseller kind of gal.

Depends on how desperate I am for the book. I buy both new and second hand. A lot of new releases are often discounted for a short period of time.

I usually wait 100 years until the copyright has expired and then download it for free.

Re: If you buy books, will you wait some time to see a discount on a book of interest

1) Yes, not so often these days as small children don't leave me much time for reading.

2) No, absolutely not. If it's something quite expensive (textbooks, standard reference works) I might shop around to find the best price, including looking at secondhand options - but once I do I'm pretty much always going to order it right away. It's a lot smaller purchase than a hotel room or airline ticket and I don't have the impression (though perhaps I'm wrong?) that prices are all that volatile from day to day... so no, I won't wait a week on the off chance of saving 3 francs. While money's that tight I'll save by not buying the book at all, got a few hundred others here I haven't read yet (one of the luxuries of marriage - eight years on and we're still working our way through each other's libraries )

If you find books are too expensive, there are always libraries.

Personally I have the opposite problem. Lots of books I will probably never read again, don't like to toss them into the trash, but don't really have enough of a network of people I can pass them on to.

Don't get me started on CDs of highly cringeworthy music. I have less trouble throwing those out though.

Great in theory, until you realise that one half of the deal consists entirely of university level mathematics and books in Irish!

Yeah... We have the same problem. The Mr. only has IT books in his shelves, and some advanced physics just because.

Then he comes and complains he can't read my books because he finds history of the Mesopotamian valley boring.

After 10 years I think he's still trying to finish the Name of the Rose.

Same here. Mine are mostly sci-fi/fantasy fiction which he doesn't read and his are mostly military, film, photography related which I don't want to read.

Frankly I was amazed when we put our two collections together that we only had one duplicate amongst the thousand or so books we have.

I'm glad that it worked out with our music collection! We actually have similar taste in music (well, we had to have some things in common...) and we only had 2 duplicates (though my Mutter was the international special edition, his was the German special edition).

One thing he actually enjoys is audio books. I don't know why, but I never really enjoyed audio books - even with great voices. There's just something about holding a big chunk of paper that allows me to immerse into another dimension, but with audio books I just get bored after a while... Same thing with electronic books - I keep jumping lines when I'm reading in the tablet. Also, there's nothing more beautiful than a gorgeous library. <3
