New fruit import business

Hi all,

A friend would like to move to CH and establish an import company to sell his bio fruit locally. He plans to move from an EU country where he is a bio fruit producer.

Unfortunately, he doesn't speak local languages.

What are the steps he needs to take to open the company, rent office/warehouse space and also arrange immigration permits etc.?

He is EU citizen.

Thanks!

Re: New fruit import business

Find a bookkeeper/pro adviser with knowledge of importing fresh food, there is to much involved to handle on this forum.

How do I find one?

Is he an accountant or something else?

I see, bookkeeper works with the accountant. Why not finding an accountant first and the he finds a bookkeeper?

Btw who will talk to customs and relevant government/food agencies regarding the importation and other issues with the products? The owner or he will need to find somebody else to do this on his behalf?

Does he speak one of the local langauges (which)? If not, how does he intend to acquire customers?

He doesn't, not even English. He will employ locals for a start and he will learn German in the near future.

His strength is his product (already sold in CH).

This is an online forum to share info. For example take the housing threads. One could easily claim that we should go to agents/property managers rather than posting here....

If anyone wants to contribute to this thread it is fine. If not it is also fine.

If his product is already sold here, then that means someone else is already importing it. Possibly even a large, established company like one of the big 3. That could be quite the competition.

Anyway, here are some links to get started. In addition to a business plan and sufficient funding, he might need some food handling certifications since he plans to import food.

Thanks. I will take a look.

Currently, he has sold some of his production via an importer but he wants to send most of his production to CH hence it makes sense to move there.

He´d better make sure that the business is viable before he moves here, especially if he doesn´t speak any language spoken here, as that makes selling your stuff quite difficult.

So how does he plan to get a residence permit without a job?

Why that would be difficult? He is selling fruit. He's got website, certifications, samples etc. He would have a local to help him for sure.

He will establish a company there. Also, he is comfortable financially. I don't really think that the Swiss will send him away.....

Don´t bet on that. He needs to set up a business plan first, as it seems you have no idea right now on how to do this. Then being comfortable financially... where? Switzerland is quite expensive.

Also, yes, if from the EU you can come here and get a job seekers permit, but you still need the money for food, rent, insurances etc.

How do you expect to land bigger contracts if you do not speak the language? How to arrange for the import of the goods?

Best to go back to the drawing board until you have something that may work out.

Of course, he will balance the upfront costs vs. potential benefit. I actually thought to ask here for some general directions to give him some tips. I don't have lots of time to work on this.

Is Zurich area more expensive than New York City for example? I doubt. Once I drove with my car to NY and I didn't have any problems living there for months.
