UK Freelancer with CH Biz question

Hi there,

My first post. Thanks for reading if your eyes are seeing this.

I'm a freelance recruiter who works with exclusively UK companies. I'm currently based out of Portugal with my company registered in the UK.

If the work situation remained constant as stated above but I changed my place of residence to CH, would I need to register a business in Switzerland?

Cheers!
Chris

No. Your business is already registered in the UK. You will need to legally register as a resident in CH and to that you will need to show you have sufficient income to support yourself here in terms of living costs.

And Brexit may or may not affect your ability to get a residence permit here, depending on what happens in the next few months.

Thanks for your response. I read this somewhere too. That's no problem. If I have a Swiss bank account and residence will I be subject to taxation in CH too?

If you have Swiss residence you will be subject to taxation on the earnings you declare to the Swiss tax authority. Residence means you are obliged to declare worldwide earnings.

If you declare the Swiss bank account when you do your tax returns, you may be subject to wealth tax on the balance, as well as tax on any interest accrued.

If you are resident here you will have to declare your world wide income in Switzerland.

Thankyou again for responding quickly.

As a sole trader I already declare income to HMRC and pay UK taxes on these earnings, with what you just said I would pay twice. I suppose an option would be to PLC my company, pay myself as an employee and pay tax this way in CH. This way I can separate the biz taxes from personal finances.

Unless you would recommend opening a biz account in CH too to simplify this process?

I can also look into hiring a lawyer to give me a clear path forward.

Thankyou :-)

Update found on double taxation:

You would appear to be evading tax in Portugal & intending to do the same in Switzerland. Whilst you will get a credit for tax paid in the UK your have a liability where you live.
Whilst it is possible you are dual resident, what is the reason you pay tax in the UK?

I'm currently in Portugal for a short stay, testing the operations of my business in order to scope out weather a permanent move outside the UK is possible.

Now I have confirmed that everything functions well, I'm looking to make a permanent move. Switzerland is an option as my gf lives there. I'm looking to do everything officially and not cut corners, but also get my facts and figures correct up front!

At present I am still a resident of the UK.

Swiss banks are far less complacent than they were a few years ago
