Exporting foodstuff from USA to Switzerland

I have an opportunity to take over an established business in USA that exports foodstuff to Switzerland. Im curious if anyone over there can help me out with regulations of the importing of foodstuffs. I can not seem to find anything online about it. I read there are restrictions but cant find what those restrictions are. Also is it true you need a place of business within Switzerland to import foodstuff? I know I would need a local representative to set up VAT since sales exceed 100k CHF per year.

Then the obvious thing would be to make it a condition of taking over the business that the old owner trains you up. After all they have they experience and the knowledge which don't.

What foodstuffs? Raw beef is going to be different to prepared dishes including beef. Etc.

You really should give this another thought, it sounds like that you want to take over a business of which you actually have no clue at all on how to run it.

Unless you can work together for a long enough time and you teach yourself the essentials like import/export rulings, storage demands, transport demands, tax rulings and all such this is going to be a recipe for disaster.

Cereal, cookies, cake mixes, etc. No dairy eggs meat fish.

You are right I have no clue that is why I am doing research on it. I have not bought the business yet and am trying to learn about how the ins and outs of logistics work so I can have a better understanding whether or not this is something that is doable.

But you're taking over a business in the US that exports. What you need in Switzerland is a customer, or customers or a distributor that will import.

Why not ask the company who actually does the importing over here?
