Yes, AHV is your pension fund. This is the state mandated fund which everyone has to pay into.

You can only take money from the 2P and 3P, not the 1P (AHV).

AHV is ONE of one's pension funds (1P), but you cannot take money from it for a business or buying a home, you can only use 2P and 3P for that.

Please think carefully about making this move. I know someone who raided their pension fund about 20 years ago to set up a business.

The business failed and he is now retired and living off the 1st pillar basic pension - and finding life hard, just when it should be easy...

This seems to relate to pension funds as in 2nd pillar. AHV, the state one, is 1st pillar. And I am not sure you can withdraw that early. Not saying you cannot, just not sure the link is clear.

This is only true to some degree.

If you only receive AHV (because you either never built up a 2nd pillar, or actually used it up for "business" like in your example), and don't hold a larger fortune, you're eligable to receive "Ergänzungsleistungen". Those will be just as high as someone paying into AHV all life + having a lower income (and thus not such high 2nd pillar)

If you get a monthly AHV of 2000 CHF (yeah, it's possible to get a bit more, but not that much more) then the yearly Ergänzungsleistungen (for a single person) will be 22k, ie almost as much as your AHV.

Calculate it yourself..

It's quite shocking actually.. unless you're having a decent income so your 2nd pillar will be above the Ergänzungsleistungen (and to get 1.8k monthly, it has to be high!), it's better to "blow" it at least 5 years ahead of pensions..

If you save up 300k in the second pillar, that's even with the current 6.8% (Which will be reduced..) just about those 20k yearly. And then we're just about even.. while you could actually use those 300k for your offsprings AND get Ergänzungsleistungen after retirement..

For those to expect having less than 300k in their second pillar by retirement, it literally means to buy some property, and then giving it to their children at least 5 years before retirement.

Your aquaintance either owns property, or otherwise wealth, if they can't claim the Ergänzungsleistungen.

Better late than never. The answer is NO. You cannot withdraw for business purpose from AHV (Pillar 1) while living in Switzerland. Only way to withdraw from the AHV is when you leave Switzerland permanently and you are a national of a country that does not have a social security agreement with Switzerland or the country's social agreement with Switzerland permits some withdrawal (e.g. Australia, India).
