Banks - UBS, Revolut...

Hi there

What is the best bank in which to receive payments coming from the US? - could be in EUR or USD currencies.

I have a UBS account, and also a Revolut one.

I understand exch rates in Revolut probably better. Not clear on fees though (assuming within my limit of 5 free transfers a month).

And for EUR / GBP payments coming from SEPA region - EUR/UK?

Ultimately I live from my UBS account so no point me accumulating too much in Revolut. I am a solopreneur.

Thanks

Simone

Use revolut or transferwise to exchange usd, eur or gbp into chf. Then move the chf from revolut or transferwise into your ubs account. The fees for both are very transparent and will best any competition unless we are talking about serious amounts of cash - at least 20k usd .

Revolut is generally cheaper in the week and transferwise on the weekend.

Revolut is totally free up to $1250 a month during the week. As in you pay interbank rate with no fee.

Don't even think about using ubs lol

Re: Banks - UBS, Revolut...

I have both UBS and Revolut accounts. You may well be charged by UBS for the inbound payment (depending on your account) whereas you won't by Revolut just for openers. I have a basic expat account with UBS and sending 7k CHF recently directly from Revolut to UBS for a rent deposit, they took 14 CHF off it for the inbound payment for example.

If you're going to be sending quite high amounts it also makes sense to upgrade to the paid Revolut account at 6.99 a month, which removes the 5k per month exchange limit before you are charged for further exchanges.

I send almost all of my Swiss salary back to UK every month to pay my mortgage and it only costs my 5CHF to do the whole transfer which I do via:

UBS > Revolut in CHF (UBS charge 5 chf as my CHF Revolut IBAN is GB as was UK resident when set up)
Revolut > CHF exchange GBP (free as premium account)
Revolut > UK HSBC (free)

When I did a comparison rate check on UBS vs Revolut's rate a while ago it was a significant margin (i.e. a few %) so it makes a big difference.

contact revolut to change the account to a get a CH IBAN and avoid the 5chf per month charge

Unfortunately that has been decreased to (I think) 1250.

For me that's a big PITA.

Yeah although the 6.99 a month for me to avoid that is well worth it but obviously that's not for everyone.

Re: Banks - UBS, Revolut...

for few months now i'm having issues with ubs declining my top ups to revolut through my ubs credit card. do others have the same issue? is it possible anymore to top up revolut with the credit card? my partner tried topping up her revolut account with the postfinance credit card and it was declined as well...

it's so annoying to use bank transfer to top up as it takes a day (and on a friday afternoon, like now, i have to wait for monday to execute the payment and hope to get it on tuesday!)...

Don't you pay a charge for doing it that way?

I am using my CS credit card for top-up on Revolut and it works, last used in August. It does not accept Amex though, Visa/Mastercard only.

Re: Banks - UBS, Revolut...

Just got a new email from Revolut:

"We wanted to let you know that we'll soon be charging a small fee when you add money to your account using a card issued in Switzerland. The fee will be 1.15% for debit cards and 1.5% for credit cards issued in Switzerland.

We always disclose the fees we charge before you confirm your top-up. This fee will only apply to Standard plan users, as our paid plans offer you fee-free card top-ups......

.....Alternatively, you can still add money to your account for free by using local bank transfer....

.....Since Switzerland is not part of the EEA, top-ups made with Swiss-issued cards are classed as international transactions. So, in order to continue supporting these cards we need to charge a small fee to cover the cost of processing an international payment."

So if I transfer money from my CH UBS account to the CH IBAN of my Revolut using eBanking (which is what I normally do) I do not get charged? This new 'charge' only applies if I use another method, i.e. using a credit/debit card to transfer CHFs ?

that is how I understood it too.... meaning CH UBS --> CH Revolut without fee; via cards only with fee

In view of this change, I did a test using a bank transfer this morning. The money has been debited from my account but not credited to my Revolut account. Does anyone know how long a bank transfer normally takes?

I just received an email that from October 25th if you top up your card with a Swiss credit or debit card Revolut will now charge 1.5% or 1.15% respectively if you're on the Standard plan.

Re: Banks - UBS, Revolut...

so, I have tried to pop up my Revolut using internal swiss bank transfer, from my UBS account to Revolut account (which is listed under CS bank in CH).
After two days of waiting, I've got my money back on UBS account. strange why it didn't go through.
and had to use credit card to pop up Revolut account with 1.5% fee. will have to look for alternatives from Revolut for my euro payments....
