Freelancing/Einzelfirma/selling handmade products

Dear All,

I have some questions regarding freelancing, I have seen some threads but I couldn’t find the answers (or haven’t read carefully enough). I moved here a few months ago but couldn’t find any jobs so I was thinking of doing freelancing, but first I want to educate myself in the topic.
Shall I start an Einzelfirma at all when freelancing? Are there any mandatory papers or anything to start an Einzelfirma? Do I need a B permit for it (I have only L permit – for job search). Do I have to pay a monthly fee because of the Einzelfirma? Up to how much annual income is it tax free? In my home country it is very easy – you start an Einzelfirma, you have to pay an exact fee every month, and up to a certain amount it is tax free. There is also a possibility to do it besides a full time job, then the monthly fee is the half of the full time Einzelfirma fee. Is there a possibility to have an Einzelfirma here besides a full time job (in case I find something in the meantime)? How can I do invoicing?
I may had some stupid questions but I really don’t know how this stuff works here…
Another question, but related to freelancing in a way, I make handmade stuff as well, how can I sell them here? I have read about some sites which are similar to e.g. Etsy, but how does it work? Do I have to pay taxes after my products? Can I e.g. sell them on a web shop or promote them on Instagram without an Einzelfirma?
Thank you very much for your help!!!

Please do a search on this site, input words 'self-employment'. There are a lot of recent threads on what you need. Start looking at the info.

You have start trading and demonstrate a viable business. In my case i worked for 3 mos, then registered and authorities simply invoiced me for the first 3 months.
In Zug canton no-one will register a private business with zeros. I thinks it's logical- if it fails, it fails and no paperwork. If it goes nicely, you register. But please note, that it can differ from canton to canton.

Regarding the L-permit implication, you may need to look at the your canton website, again do a search, call the department that deals with reg of companies or self-employment.

Starting an Einzelfirma (sole proprietorship) is super easy: You bill a costumers, make revenue and sales, and specially profit. The last part distinguishes an Einzelfirma from a hobby or past time.

I think you will need to apply for permit B. Conditions are mentioned here:
https://www.kmu.admin.ch/kmu/en/home...s-eu-efta.html

In addition you must register with the your cantons social security administration, and pay at least the minimum contributions.
https://svazurich.ch/unsere-produkte...rwerbende.html

Once you have a turnover of CHF 100k per year must enter the Einzelfirma in the business register. You can also do it voluntarily which might help with acquiring certain goods and/or customers.
https://www.kmu.admin.ch/kmu/en/home...ietorship.html

For income tax: In general every single franc of profit is taxed. You will have to do a simple bookkeeping where you keep track of expenses and sales. At the end of the tax year you will have to do and file a regular tax return and Hilfsblatt A. The profit from your Einzelfirma is taxed as part of your worldwide income.

Once you have turnover of CHF 100k per year you have to pay VAT. Before that you can do so voluntarily, which might make sense if you have to buy a lot of supplies.
https://www.estv.admin.ch/estv/en/ho...rmationen.html

Once you hit a turnover of CHF 500k you must do regular bookkeeping according on of the approved accounting standards. It can make sense to do this before hit this limit.

Without knowing your nationality, it's not easy to give you proper advice. Since you have an L job seeker permit I assume you're an EU national. In which case no, you cannot work with that permit. It's literally just for job hunting. You'd need to get a B permit to be self-employed and would have to show you can support yourself financially while the business gets established to get one.
