Christine I has no particular reputation at present
Is it possible to run a Canadian Sole Proprietorship internationally?

I have moved to Switzerland from Canada and have been offered a contract position as a consultant at a company in Geneva for 3-6 months. If I run a sole proprietorship in Canada, can I deliver invoices to the Swiss company with the money going directly into my Canadian account, or is it not possible to run a Canadian sole proprietorship internationally?

I don't see why not if the Swiss client agrees to the arrangement. You will need to find out your IBAN details on your Canadian bank account so that the company can do the transfer (pay the bill). My guess is that they will want to pay in CHF which means that CHF will hit your account in Canada and the bank will do the change into $C with the rate of the day and any charges that they have.

In any event, be sure that it is documented that the contract is between your Canadian "entity" and the company. As a reminder, you will not charge them any GST.

Have you "left" Canada or are you going back in the near future? If you are billing through a Canadian entity, you will continue to pay Canadian taxes and be considered a Canadian resident.

Is it a case that you are not yet into the Swiss system (do not have a permit)? I am not sure how the Swiss will view things. That is another question depending on your status here.

I'd suggest that you need to get good legal advice on this, both here and in Canada.

The problem about a sole proprietorship is that it is not a legal entity in it's own right, so it would be difficult to explain to the Swiss tax authorities how you could come over here and leave it behind and why they should not tax you on it... on the other hand it would also be difficult to explain the reverse to the Canadian tax authorities, in that if the business is still in Canada, then you must be too and they should tax you on all your income arising in Switzerland....

Also if this business is a service provider and you are providing the service in Switzerland, then you may be required to charge VAT on it and hand it over to the Swiss government.

Bottom line, seek out good advice from a professional.

Jim

You can run the proprietorship internationally if you are based in Canada. If you actually move to Switz to do the work, you need a work permit. Working in Switz on a business visit or visa is not allowed. A short term permit.

Would be good to know how you did.
