Swiss fuel prices vary greatly - also from canton to canton.
Is there a cantonal element to the Swiss fuel duty?

The Swiss are less price sensitive in general I would say, although this changed massively in the 10 years we've been here. eg Comparis and, to stay on topic, the big increase in cheap self service fuel stops etc. At least 3 have opened around us in the last couple of years.

Re: Swiss fuel price website - useful ?

Besides the resident Swiss audience I could also imagine that this would be very popular with neighbouring countries. E.g. I know several Germans who enjoy filling up on the cheap fuel when visiting and the German consumer is one of the most price conscious (guess where Aldi and Lidl originate). I'm sure many would relish finding the cheapest petrol pump and plugging the coordinates into their GPS when passing through.

Good idea and good luck! Let me know if you get it going and I'll put a link on our website.

The difficulty with such a website is keeping it up to date and if the stations add their own prices, keeping it honest - remember the snow depth report from ski resorts...
Yes, this could be a issue but i was thinking of a trust level thing, like eBay, i.e. if someone posts a price that is inaccurate than other registered users can say + or - to their post. So when they post in the future you can see what trust level they have.

Hi,

I am thinking of developing an online fuel price website similar to www.pumps.ie . The updates would be user generated and i would offer some incentive for users to post updates.

Do you think this would be a useful resource or do you always go to the same gas station no matter what ?

If anyone has any other ideas about an online application they would like to see please let me know !!
Sounds like a great idea. Rather than reinventing the wheel look at the following web site for what others have done with this subject. It is interactive and does a fine job of reporting gasoline prices on a real time basis. Most motorist refer to this site for their hometown prices.

http://www.floridagasprices.com

I would be interested in your feedback on this site

It's easy enough to use, but is extremely Germanocentric. There are 3 entries for unleaded in FR and none at all in VD.

Not very useful in a country where gasoline competition doesn't exist and the price of gasoline seems to be set by a "gasoline cartel". Here in Säuliamt (Knonaueramt) everybody raises or lowers their price by the same amount on the same day with a variation of no more than 0.03 chf. between high and low.

This Florida site (and the other 49 states like it) are off-shoots of http://www.gasbuddy.com

If you want a successful site, look at the features here:

1. Clear trending (by city/canton?)
2. Maps to know what stations are along your route, but may be just off the autobahn a bit
3. User input: you already thought of this one.

Just don't expect to charge 10 CHF/mo or something for it. Good luck!

Re: Swiss fuel price website - useful ?

Here are a couple of UK versions:

Petrol Prices.com This looks reasonably accurate
Whatgas.com This one is months out of date.

I have looked at them occasionally when prices were rising. They are only any good if up to date. In my experience this is not always the case. It is not usually worth going out of your way on the off chace that fuel may be cheaper.

Generally getting to know the garages in your area seems to be the bst bet. The same ones tend to be the cheapest any time.

If you are going somewhere new you probably wont have the chance to shop around. As a general guide, I try to avoid the motorways and small villages. Supermarket and shopping centre garages tend to be the cheapest.

I used Petrol Prices when I was in the UK - you can set a number of different post codes for where you tend to travel - in my case home, office and central London as I was there every week. I would get a daily e-mail digest of the cheapest stations in those areas on that day. When you do the amount of driving I used to do in the UK it can make quite a saving.

I'm not sure where they got their figures though, I think it might have even been from the stations themselves.

9,688 petrol stations and 8,000 daily updates.
That still leaves room for a lot of errors.

Re: Swiss fuel price website - useful ?

May I ask please what happened to this idea? The problem seems to be where to get the initial data, actually.
