Technology Hubs

Hi, my wife and I are looking at moving to Switzerland in about a year. I am in the software development and consultancy business.

Where are the main technological hubs outside Zurich. A Swiss version of Cambridge for example.

Re: Technology Hubs

Close - but no cigar. Was looking for hubs outside Zurich.

I know about Zurich being a hub, but the eye-watering property prices are putting me off. I guess I'm going to have to live somewhere far outside Zurich and commute in. Maybe give the fabled Swiss public transport a try.

It's a real double edge sword. We need access to a good international school and expat community to help my wife and kids get integrated more easily, but the house prices are just....well. I live in the midlands in England. I have a large-ish house, 5 bedrooms, huge garden. It seems I would need to be a steel baron or F1 driver to afford the same anywhere near Zurich.

Many thanks.

Sorry if this isn't terribly helpful but: Isn't it pretty much a requirement or big plus if you have high mobility as a freelancer anyway? If you have a look at a map, Switzerland isn't that big and the commuteable distance to Zurich is a big enough radius

What about Zug? Loads of companies have their headquarters here due to favourable tax rates.

My husband freelances with clients from Basel to Zug and Zürich is a 25 min train ride away.

Are you looking to buy or rent?

Is this a long-term move or short?

You might want to reconsider buying until you know you love it here and plan to stay, as the property market in Switzerland can't really be compared to the UK. Do a search, you'll find more info on the forum.

Yes wherever we go I'll make sure that Zurich is possible on a daily commute. I think we are leaning towards going just south of Basel. Good International School there, Basel is a good Pharma tech centre, Zurich do-able.

Hi, I'm aware of Zug's favourable tax rates, as well as it's high property prices - too many millionaires I think We're going to need a big house (5 bedroom) and the prices in Zug make my eyes water.

I don't know anything about Rapperswil. It looks nice, perhaps a little olde worlde. Looks as if I should be able to ride a horse to work and carry a sword. Which would be nice.

Every day is an adventure in research at the minute. I had completely discounted buying a house, but I'm looking again at it.

I intend this to be a permanent move. I love Switzerland, and don't intend leaving. Ever. Maybe for holidays. At a push.

Wouldn't you also be a millionaire owning a 5 bed house in the UK? I'm a millionaire in the negative direction on one bank account

Where we live, 5 bed houses rent for around 6k a month. Substantially cheaper to buy and pay the interest only morgage though.

Do you really need 5 bedrooms?? 4 kids? Offices can be put in basements too, we have a heated and insulated 20m2 basement room with windows that my husband uses as an office. No distractions is great and our son doesn't even know my husband is working from home. Great temperature for servers in the summer too.

Re: Technology Hubs

If you intend on staying forever why not put your kids in local schools and save a small fortune? It will help with integration in the long term. Or are they at an age where they are in a critical phase of their education? There is plenty of info on schools in the Family Matters forum.

Hah, no. I live in the East Midlands, house prices aren't *that* ridiculous up here.

That's what's making me look again at buying. 6k on rent is ludicrous. Although it's cheaper over towards Basel.

We have 3 sprogs with one on the way. So it will be 4 by the time we're coming over. We've tried having the kids share before, it's hellish, so we're not doing it again. Not whilst we still need sleep at any rate.

Not many houses have basements over here. I'd work in the outside loo if the wifi would reach

They're pretty young. They're currently 1,3 and 5. We're looking at international schools s much as for my wife's benefit as the kids, meeting fellow expats etc.

Although the oldest 2 are in private schools over here (reception and nursey), the Swiss school system seems to be a lot better on the face of it, so we would be more prepared to entrust our offspring to it after a couple of years.

Re: Technology Hubs

I'd still check out the local schools right away while they are young enough to learn the language with no problem. For your wife she could meet plenty of ex-pats at the Zug International Womens Club, there are lots of ex-pats in Zug so meeting other people in her situation should not be a problem.

Full-time day care costs CHF 24k per kid here. 2 kids part-time will be costing us CHF 3k a month soon. With 4 kids that's a lot of freelancing hours you are going to have to do Surely it would be better to go public schools ie free and spend more time at home?
