Opening a gallery

Hi guys
Just a wee question for any kind person out there who can help me.... I'm a ceramic artist and i have a vast interest in any art, my dream is to open a gallery/art shop selling pieces of my contacts/friends etc.. Has anyone got any advice on how i may go about opening such a place in Zurich/Winterthur/Schaffhausen?... I'm an aussie on an L Permit (waiting for the B) currently living in Schaffhausen. I've even considered opening an internet shop and doing an exhibition on a regular basis to show my pieces... thx for all your kind replies, cheers

Start with small moves before you get involved with leases, overheads etc., especially being on a L-permit.

Perhaps supply an art/craft shop with your wares on a commission basis. Walk in with a few examples and offer them 30% (they'll want at least 60% - meet in the middle).

Here's a place in Zurich which may help: einzigart - plattform für design -

Site's in German but the honies there speak the English.

Let us know what you do

Yeah, don't get involved with a shop at first, they're bottomless pits. Start a web site and do some exhibitions and fairs. As Uncle says, let us know what you do, I'm doing some work for a new gallery opening next month and could pass on your stuff.

Re: Opening a gallery

I like the idea of a website.. a friend of mine is already in the throws of setting one up for me... what about the legalities of it all though??? Hate the thought of the taxman knocking on the door one day...

Re: Opening a gallery

yeah sure i get that ... but with an L permit how is that possible?? sorry, not completely ofey with the beaurocracy of it all. Would i have to set myself up as "self-employed"? I understood that you need a B Permit for that
