Get billed as a company or an employee doing IT consulting?

To do freelance IT work in CH, is it better to have the company or agency pay your company (registered in your home country?) or to just sign onto payroll at that company and have them take out all the necessary state deductions and taxes? My instinct is that even if it's more hassle to set up a company for this purpose, it might be worth it to cut down on some of the slice that the middle man (employment agency) takes in the process. Any thoughts?

My husband is an independent consultant in Zurich and, having considered all the options, went down the Agent route. He is German but even he (as a German speaker I mean) found all the bureaucracy, not to mention set-up costs, just not worth the hassle. I don't know which part of the country you are in but I can let you have his agent details if you PM me.

Re: Get billed as a company or an employee doing IT consulting?

I work through a GmbH. For my clients in Switzerland, it's almost mandatory for me to work through an agency. If I was the type of freelancer who only has one client at a time,I wouldn't bother with a company, I'd go on the payroll of the agency, or use a payroll company. It is difficult (impossible?) to work in CH through a non-CH registered company.

That's what I needed to know. Thanks.

I know a few agencies so that's not so much the problem. Thanks, though.

it just means he's lazy or impatient. Setup costs are not that high (max. 3k CHF), and bureaucracy for a GmbH is by far easier than that in Germany. Depending on what he does, an own GmbH may save him a lot of money.
