Web developer market

Hello,

I visited Switzerland last April and I was very excited about the country. I currently work as an EU based freelance web developer. I am thinking of moving to Switzerland for some months and I would like to know the following:
1) Do SMEs hire independent web developers or do they prefer large companies
2) Is it common for someone to find a 4day/week permanent job (so that I can be able to keep up with my already established clients)
3) Is there a common marketplace for freelance/contract jobs for Switzerland?

Thanks

Re: Web developer market

There is a good market here I believe. My wife runs one such company and we've had quite a bit of work come in since we arrived a few months ago. Hopefully it will carry on like this!

Re: Web developer market

The market is quite good. But it's a lot easier to find clients as a web agency then as a freelancer. Swiss people like the feeling of security from an agency. But because of the extreme prices it's slowly changing.

If You're good and You know how to get clients You will be fine!

Re: Web developer market

Hi Alex,

I work for a company where we hire free-lance web developers but usually we hire them from a small pool of people we know. If we hire somebody new for a project it is usually a small project (to see what this person can do) and usually they are referred to us by people we know.

Starting from scratch is difficult. Networking is important (as is perhaps the case for all professions).

* If you can start working for a company that does contract work, you will get into contact with potential clients . If we work with a company we tend to ask for the same persons if they did good work in the past.
* Have a personal page where you present your recent work. And make sure it is presentable on all kinds of platforms (it shows what you can do)
* If you don not find something geographically close try freelance websites like: http://www.freelancer.com/ and http://www.scriptlance.com/ , as this can keep your CV fresh.

Re: Web developer market

Forgot to answer your other question: Yes we have people who work for 3 or 4 days per week in web related positions. Usually these are projects where we pay for a fixed amount: e.g. 10 days but the deadline is in 20 days.

Re: Web developer market

Thanks data for your reply. So, apart from personal website (which should any freelancer have by default), and registration to various freelancing pools), getting small contract jobs is No1 at the beginning for networking and reputation building.

I have also done some research on the technologies used by major companies. I see that Java rules the market. Is it possible however for someone who is expert in PHP (and relative stuff) to get jobs from small or medium sized companies?
