Actually I prefer smaller events (5-10 people) so everyone can talk to each other particularly if you are meeting them for the first time. For bigger events like curry night, difficult to meet/talk to people who are not at your table.

we can always introduce you all to some of the crowd having dinner here on thursday. A whole range of new expats.. and some locals- no discrimination 
Plus there 'll be room at the bar until 7:00 ish
