Burkliplatz is the heart of the crush and the bridge is a real funnel. Best get off at Stadelhofen and try and skirt round. At the start is probably the best, and follow through in your own pace.
I was afraid of that. What about approaching from Bahnhofstrasse, either before or after the parade's gone by? (It starts in Utoquai at 3:15, ends in Enge around 10PM, so should be passing through Bürkliplatz around... 6:00? 7:00? No idea really.)

Maybe I should just PM SoCalCoise (AKA the Funnel Cake Lady) and see if she'll be firing up the old fryer sometime in the morning for a test batch...

Right - I've been debating whether to put this in the Street Parade thread or the Non-Street Parade thread - but figured parade goers are more likely to have the answer.

Street Parade is absolutely totally not my thing - but I really really really want a funnel cake.

What would you reckon are my chances of making it down to Burkliplatz and back without being squashed alive, (more than temporarily) deafened, having my hair filled with confetti (wait, that's Fasnacht isn't it?) or being otherwise interfered with?

What's the best direction/time of day to try it?

Any suggestions are welcome.
That looks lovely..!

On a level of one to ten in the underwhelmed department, the battery on my meter has either died or it's just a confirmation of what I already know to be a fact.

In fact, if there was a Squidgy the Hedgehog alternative free concert anywhere else on the planet for children, including dressing up as domestic farmyard animals, I would right now be measuring up my udders and having my bell tuned.
...what does that mean..? At the risk of sounding " sensitive Tommy " and most definitely learning to read In the lines..?! ..what does that mean..? Please, off the record.. Ps. I am actually a man ..!!

pfff, seen that. I think two years ago there was an old grey-bearded man wearing nothing but a coarse fishnet bodysuit. You could see all of his, eh, anatomy
I remember a group of guys who were each wearing one sock; nothing else - but the sock was strategically placed.......

Re: Zurich Street Parade 2011

Worth mentioning...

I think the trams in Zurich will be running through the night.

Plus watch out for thieves. After spending the afternoon near the lake at last years SP, I took my girlfriend to the Kontiki Rock bar as she prefers that kind of music (although for Street Parade they were playing Fun n Soul downstairs and Rock n Roll). A minor scifffle () broke out, and then my girlfriend's bag was missing. Cost 600chf to get a locksmith out in the middle of the night.
A few years ago another friend of mine had her purse stolen at Street Parade pickpocket.

Reminds me of my first Street Parade. I saw a girl with a great body walking away down the street towards Paradeplatz in the late afternoon with her boyfriend.
All she was wearing wash a tight transparent dress made out of nylon and shoes with no underwear. Unbelievable.

Re: Zurich Street Parade 2011

Hi everyone, just wondering if you can give me an insight into what its all about. I'm keen to go but everyone I am supposedly going with just wants to go and get trashed in the closest club after? Is this like a day to take the camera out for memories, or one to just enjoy it and then go drinking?

Regards,
Mike.

Sure, Mike http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_Parade

Read it, look at the many photos hosted online, and then make an educated guess.

Cheers, I had already read that link. What I meant more was, is it one of these events where its almost expected that everyone will be drinking? Also, as its people, are they ok with reasonable photos being taken, obviously nothing that would be invasive?

Regards,
Mike.

1. Yes, or on something else;

2. You'll have to ask them.

Seriously, people who've made the effort to make up funny or funky outfits absolutely love the attention when you ask them if you can take their photo.
People mill about drinking cans of beer staring at everyone and then once an hour panicking about where the nearest toilet is.

If you're out earnestly taking photos every minute while everyone else in your group is enjoying the atmosphere and a few beers, you may be a bit out of place.

I've seen a few unsavoury old men with expensive camera kit asking teenage girls in skimpy outfits if they can pose for photos for them, it looked very dodgy. But the girls posed anyway. Yuck.

You should try to mix and enjoy it as well as taking photos. a decent cameraphone should be okay (this is going to be the best summer weather for SP for several years so with good light you won't need a top notch camera for clear pics). Better to go and come back saying you enjoyed it rather that it was 'interesting'.

But if you do take an expensive camera and live in Zurich, you could go home and drop it off and then come back out later.
