City/Town: Ferhaltorf, ZH
Event Type: Family
Location: Flugplatz Im Speck, 8320 Fehraltorf
Price: 15.00 per day

It's Highland Games time again and the first one is next weekend at the Flugplatz Im Speck at Fehraltorf near Pfaeffikon (ZH, not SZ). If you haven't been before, it's a 3 day outdoor festival with men in kilts, lots of bagpipes, whisky, live music and good food.

The Games involve the usual caber tossing and hammer throwing but these guys also create their own unique games... which can be quite, er, entertaining.

I'll be there for the 5th year with the British Cheese Centre and as well as selling cheese and serving Hot Toddies, for the first time I will also be serving scones and clotted cream.

If you'd like to meet up with some other EFers I suggest we have an EF meet at between 4 and 6 on the Saturday but feel free to comment about when you might be there below. I'll provide free cheesy nibbles for the EF crowd.

Entry price is 15.00 per day or 40.00 for all 3 days including camping. The 2nd games are at the end of August near Fribourg and although slightly smaller they are actually more authentic.

See you there!

Re: First Highland games of 2012

It was a weird but fun experience. It seems anyone who has a piercing, tattoo, kilt or just some black clothes attended. Everyone was friendly, the games were a laugh to watch, and grumpy happily awards people who help with tasty scones and cheese.

Of course, you can skip the helping and buy what you fancy. The food and drink inside is pretty cheap for Switzerland.

Hey,

Thanks. Yes got the pm. Think we are going to try and come tomorrow. I have been informed clotted cream is off the menu for me due to being pregnant. Unless you can guarantee its made with pasteurized milk?
My clotted cream is pasteurised!

Yesterday was very hot but we had a massive downpour late on so the ground is wet this morning so wear boots or come barefoot. Not too many scones left but plenty of cc

Re: First Highland games of 2012

Just getting ready to leave for day two of the games. Maybe this time I'll see something other than the cheese stand.....but to be fair as soon as I start helping I can't leave

And for anyone that turns up I am not Mike's daughter as he keeps telling everyone

We were there yesterday and the scones & cream are *magnificent*! Got a couple to to take with (thanks grumpy!) and had a scrumptious breakfast this morning.

It's a fun, relaxed crowd. Just a heads-up for when heading back to the train station: There's a sign that says the shuttle bus leaves on the full hour, but it does not. Several people were waiting for it and the bus returning from the train station showed up 10 minutes later. We thought he was just late but the driver proceeded to get into a nasty yelling match with some other Swiss about accuracy of the sign and it not being his problem. The bus does eventually leave, but not exactly on a schedule it seems. Best advice: skip the bus, enjoy the 20ish minute leisurely walk back to the train station and wear off all the goodies you've eaten at the fair

I would have loved to come, but I had something important and time consuming to do yesterday and it will keep me busy still today and for many days and years to come - details will follow shortly.

Or do what I did and get a lift with the band
Fantastic afternoon, and loved the devonshire cream tea, especially with scottish beer.

Re: First Highland games of 2012

'twas a grand day out. Twice.

I even bought a kilt (well, actually, three kilts. Or maybe two and a half). And a sporran.

Re: First Highland games of 2012

Thanks to everyone from here who came and said hello and especially to those that helped me on the Saturday and Sunday, I couldn't have managed without you!

The next games are at the end of the month in St Ursen near Fribourg and I've created an event for that here. Hope to see more Efers there again!

If you get a chance, go! It's great fun. A bit off the wall. See the Swiss let their (long, greasy) hair down.

Actually the 2nd one is less er...... whacky and more "Scottish" but still very friendly and eccentric!
