Re: Probiotic power – make your own!

The E.U. has just passed a law banning the use of the word Probiotic from the labels of food and drinks.

Why? Because there is no evidence that they do anything at all health wise.

Switzerland isn't in the E.U. but if it were, the person running these courses may be on thin ice using such a nonsense word in her advertising.

Not sure if that is something that supports or detracts from the OP - they seem to be unenthusiastic about the commercial stuff which is loaded with sugar and the rest of it.

I suspect the OP is more likely to discuss things like kefir and other such stuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kefir

Researcher Steven Hertzler stated: "Both kefir and yogurt improve lactose digestion simply because some of the bacterial cells give up their lives in the intestinal tract, release their enzymes and digest the lactose. It's a one-shot deal. However, kefir has additional microorganisms that may be able to colonize the intestines and benefit health further by protecting the intestine against disease-causing bacteria."

The last line is quite appealing. There is lots out there about it's health benefits but I aint getting preachy here. Disclaimer: I have a bunch of kefir at home and my stomach feels great these days! Placebo or not, I am having some of that!

Re: Probiotic power – make your own!

Where do you think the bacteria for all those probiotic drinks originally came from?
