Am quite excited about Paul Simon and Jill Scott (who I sadly missed when she performed in Zurich)

Re: Montreux Jazz Festival

Why can't it be in Zurich? Cuz its always been in Montreux

Remember the fire during the concert? (Smoke on the water and fire in the sky):

The lyrics of the song tell a true story: on December 4, 1971, Deep Purple had set up camp in Montreux, Switzerland to record an album using a mobile recording studio (rented from the Rolling Stones and known as the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio - referred to as the "Rolling truck Stones thing" and "the mobile" in the song lyrics) at the entertainment complex that was part of the Montreux Casino (referred to as "the gambling house" in the song lyric). On the eve of the recording session a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert was held in the casino's theatre. During the gig a fire broke out: "In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire. Somebody in the audience had fired a flare gun into the ceiling, at which point the rattan covering started to burn"[1][2], as mentioned in the "some stupid with a flare gun" line. The resulting fire destroyed the entire casino complex, along with all the Mothers' equipment. The "smoke on the water" that became the title of the song (credited to bassist Roger Glover, who related how the title occurred to him when he suddenly woke from a dream a few days later) referred to the smoke from the fire spreading over Lake Geneva from the burning casino as the members of Deep Purple watched the fire from their hotel across the lake. The "Funky Claude" running in and out is referring to Claude Nobs, the director of the Montreux Jazz Festival who helped some of the audience escape the fire.

Thanks for the interesting insight. I remember looking at Smoke on the Water written somewhere around the lake in Montreux that reminded me of the song, but I didn't know it was actually about the song until now!

Yes, there used to be a fence by the Place De Marche which had the bars for the intro to Smoke on the water on it. This has recently been removed though for some reason.

Anyone up for Raconteurs or Interpol?? I'd dearly love to see the latter as I missed them in the run up to my move here

Jazz, what's that?

Why do they still call this Montreux "Jazz" Festival? For jazz fan, try Cully instead!

Seems, that there are quite a few Interpol fans round here. I'm also heading to Montreux for their gig tomorrow.

Re: Montreux Jazz Festival

You may be interested to know that various sets from this year's festival are being aired on TSR2:

Quote:
Montreux Jazz Festival on Swiss television TSR 2 Starting october 18, the Swiss TV channel TSR 2 will air a selection of concerts which took place during the 2008 Montreux Jazz Festival. Find hereunder the concert schedule aired until christmas. More concerts will be shown in spring 2009.
If you wish to experience more Montreux Jazz Festival footage, you are welcome to visit our new multimedia website www.liveatmontreux.ch .

Sheryl Crow Saturday 18th October TSR2 23:30

One of the most popular rockers of the ‘90s, Sheryl Crow, comes back 12 years after her last concert in Montreux for the release of Detour. Filled with songs about having and holding, changing and letting go, about beginnings, endings, and the roads between them, her new album was inspired by how she feels things are going in the world and what's happened to her the last couple of years.

The Kills Saturday 25th October TSR2 23:30

The bluesy punk duo the Kills consists of vocalist/guitarist VV - Alison Mosshart - and drummer/guitarist/vocalist Hotel - Jamie Hince. They formed in 2000, issued their first demo in 2001 and started touring with such bands as Le Tigre. The success followed immediately. Midnight Boom, their last album, showcases their gritty, erotically-charged sound and reminds that no-one makes rock like them.

Sophie Hunger Saturday 15th November TSR2 01:00

Somewhere between Norah Jones and Cat Power, Sophie Hunger is inventing her own classic, yet modern sound. On stage, this seemingly directionless direction takes her to higher grounds, using tempo variation and changing moods whenever she pleases. From an untempo spokenwords blues to a piano ballad, the lady can do anything and seeing how she’s only 23 years old, the future is wide open.

The Raconteurs Saturday 6th December TSR2 23:30

A self-described "new band made up of old friends," the Raconteurs feature the White Stripes' Jack White, B. Benson, P. Keeler and J. Lawrence. The idea for the band began when Benson and White collaborated on the song "Steady, as She Goes," which became their first single on Broken Boy Soldier, which was an instant success. They have just released their second opus: Consolers of the Lonely Heart.

Saxon Saturday 13th December TSR2 23:30

Saxon are an English heavy metal band, formed in 1977 in Barnsley, Yorkshire. As leading lights in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal they had particular big success in the early 1980s with several successful UK Top 40 albums.
