Swiss launch of the Porsche Taycan - also one for the starwars fans ;)

on the 29/02/2020 Porsche Basel will launch the new all electric Taycan

https://www.porsche-basel.ch/newsand...emiere&lang=de

but with a difference, as Porsche sponsored the lastest starwars movie its going to be a starwars themed launch, lots of characters from the films and props etc will be there including R2-D2 and R2-KT

I hope they are renting from you. Because otherwise, meh. I expect a lot more from Porsche than a car that can't beat a 4-door, 5-seat sedan car in any department.

Probably a 4-door, 7-seater, in that case.

Thanks for the invite. I was planning to go to Porsche Oftringen. Now I have to convince my wife of driving a bit longer...then register.

Relax, let's just enjoy our 4 wheel toys which probably never had the traction control set to OFF

PS. It's good for the soul to see beautiful 911s

And the first news about Taycan on fire

Sounds so familiar for Tesla and gets so much attention. Welcome to the club Porsche.

That and driving dynamics - at least.

So the Porsche wins on
- driving dynamics
- exterior design
- interior design
- build quality
- 800V System (if you ever find a charger that supports it)

It loses on
- range

A Dacia probably has more range than a 911 turbo as well in the petrol world... but nobody ever thought like that.

If that's your criteria then the Lotus Evija will beat Porsche on all of those.

The Tesla is a different car for a different market sector - a friend of ours goes to the ski slopes in his with his wife and four children - and skis etc. You won't do that in the Porsche.

Of course the Lotus isn't in the same category as the Porsche either. But that was my point.

Interesting article on the range here

In fairness not many people have 4 kids these days and you can put a box on the roof of the Porsche.

I’m going to the event at the Zurich Obersee Porsche centre. No real interest in the Taycan specifically, as it doesn’t suit our needs - load lugger and sports car works better for us - but the technology here will be in the EV Macan that is due for release next year and would definitely be of interest.

Re: Swiss launch of the Porsche Taycan - also one for the starwars fans ;)

The difference among the Tesla S, the Taycan and the Lotus Evija can be explained by the Alex Roy’s Pyramid of Automotive Actualization : "A pyramid of car ownership. On the bottom are vehicles you absolutely need. On top? The vehicles you dream about. How many cars are required to fulfill one’s automotive needs?.......a Fourth Car is the car you want, not the car you need." https://jalopnik.com/the-worlds-best...car-1715035009

When people talk about needs such as range, doors, number of seats or ability to carry stuff, they talk about the car they need: the 1st car that provides transportation. In some cases, families can afford a practical 1st car and a more desirable 2nd car (desirable in aesthetical and mechanical terms).

When people talk about desirable features such exterior design and driving dynamics they're talking about the car they want not the car they need, because they surely have other cars for the daily grind....or a GA. As Treverus mentioned above, a Dacia beats a 911 in range, who cares?

Considering the ideas above, a Tesla Model S is a 1st car, a Porsche Taycan may be a second car, and the Lotus Evija fits the definition of the mythical 4th car. Therefore, they're not comparable at all, they exist in different worlds.

Back to Mr. Roy's wise words: "A Fourth Car represents the dream not because of what it can do, but because of what it cannot. It cannot carry too much. If anything. It can’t always work, but it’s nice if it does. It can’t be fixed by just anyone. It cannot be leased. It must be owned. One can love cars, but one can only truly be in love with A car."

PS. Switzerland is great to be Automotively Actualized, get an SBB GA for transport needs and then buy the car you want

You missed the criteria that matter in bragging competitions:
- the Tesla is faster in a drag race
- but the Porsche is faster when you do 10 drag races
- and most important: the Porsche is faster on the Nürburgring

Someone seems to have switched your computer off in the middle of your post. Presumably you're comparing the Taycan turbo S to the Tesla Model S Performance.

The exterior and interior design are subjective, so the Taycan wins for you (in the 4-seater sports car category) and loses for others who want or need a proper sedan. Admittedly, Porsche has an appalling record when it comes to designing 4-door cars, and the Taycan is by far the best of a very bad bunch. Even if it does have a stupid name ("turbo"?!)

Much the same with driving dynamics—it's all in the eye of the beholder. I don't doubt, though, that the Taycan handles like a sports car.

As for build quality, I've not yet inspected a Taycan. You might remember that I've been a very vocal critic of Teslas for some time, and the car I bought had some minor issues. But they were somewhat less critical than I expected and they were all rectified, quickly and completely. But for the extra $90,000 or so, I agree, the Taycan probably wins on build quality.

The 800V system—well, you said it. And while we're on the subject, you seem to have forgotten about Tesla's network of Superchargers, which are even free for many drivers.

So, after we agree that the Taycan loses heavily on range (and yes, range anxiety is a thing, and very different in EVs to having to fill up your 911 turbo every 300 km), let's continue the list of where the top-of-the-range Taycan loses against the Model S Performance:

- charging network
- acceleration (oh, that's embarrassing)
- top speed (oops)
- power (even on over-boost)
- autonomous driving
- infotainment
- over-the-air updates
- seating capacity
- price

The Taycan is a nice car. But in no way is it significantly "better" than the Model S, especially if you start comparing the lower-spec versions. Its advantages rest in subjective measures.

The lotus is a limited run exotic costing 2.3 million. A Taycan is cheaper than my Panamera. I go to the ski slopes in that and would do the same in a taycan. Why not?

The biggest issue I have with Tesla, and the reason I didn't get one last year, is I can't see Tesla has a long term future, they hemorrhage money, at some point people are going to want their cash back or say enough is enough, if they start to have thousands of warranty claims due to failing batteries after 7 years (they are covered for 8 right?) then its game over, and the less said about Elon's mental state the better.

I always got the impression Elon hoped someone like ford or toyota would buy the company out long before now.

A Taycan has half the boot capacity of the Tesla S.
Does that make a difference? Hell yes if you have four people in the car. With two, not so much so.
