Hi all

Just reminding you all of the upcoming Champagne, Champagne! trip (October 3-4 2009)

This Babel Travel adventure takes you on an enchanting tour of Champagne: home of the fabled drink, site of one of France's great Gothic cathedrals in Reims, and a countryside that is so cultivated and groomed that you will hardly recognize it as agriculture! We’ll learn how Champagne is produced, travel through the picture postcard village of Hautvillers - where the monk, Dom Pérignon 'invented' Champagne, hike through vineyards and try some of the regions fine cuisine in the tiny village of Aÿ.

The idea would be to meet at the Basel SBB at 6.55am, Saturday October 3rd. The train to Reims leaves at 7.15am and arrives at 11.09am. Upon arrival we’ll transfer to Epernay, in the heart of the Champagne region. After checking into our guesthouse, we’ll embark on a tour of the region. First stop is the pretty village of Aÿ where we’ll have lunch and, of course try some champagne! Afterwards, we’ll hike through the vineyards to the picturesque village of Champillon (1 hour) and finish in the birthplace of Champagne - Hautvillers. It’s here where we’ll learn how Champagne is produced. We’ll return to Epernay in the evening.

On Sunday, there’s plenty of time to explore Epernay before we travel onto Reims. In Reims we’ll visit the town’s main attractions – the Notre-Dame cathedral, Saint Remi Basilica and the charming old town. At around 3pm we’ll return to Basel, arriving at 7pm.

Some more information on these places are found below.

The price is 290 CHF and covers all transport costs, accommodation in a Epernay guesthouse (dorm beds), champagne tasting in Hautvillers, a hike through the vineyards near Epernay, tour of Reims and the services of a tour guide.

The last harvest of the year will be taking place when we’re in the Champagne district.
