The problem with many conventional pubs and bars is they have tie-in contracts with single suppliers and the Carlsberg / Heinieken duopoly have basically wiped the market.........
That's exactly the problem. Loads of great beer in Switzerland but the small brewers can't get their beers into the bars because of these exclusivity contracts. I could have taken thousands (and I mean many many thousands) to finance the bar from the big players if I only bought beer from them. But the basis of my business plan is that we would raise finance privately instead leaving us free to buy beer from whoever we want.

And judging by the first 4 days, we made the right choice!

Re: The International Beer Bar - Zürich

Good luck with the new venture, and I look forward to visiting.

The earlier discussion about the possibility of locally brewed British-style real ale was intriguing. While the market here wouldn't sustain large scale production, it's very obvious to me that a small, knowledgable brewer selling a decent draft ale or two into expat/specialist-beer bars would very quickly gain a loyal following.

Especially to the locals, you'd be surprised how many are yearning for proper British ales (2 young Swiss lasses went through 6 half litre bottles each of strong British ales the other night... they were very friendly at the end of the night ). Looks like it will be well into the new year before our locally brewed Bitter will be ready on hand pump though.

Good news though is that on Monday our taps finally made it from Italy, they look very sexy and tap beer is flying out, especially Brull! Double IPA and the Appenzeller Swiss Stout. IMHO, it's far superior to Guinness brewed over here. And most customers agree.

Tonight we'll have on tap: CHF - 3 / 5 DL

CH Rappi Gold Pale Ale 4.8% 5.50 - 8.50
CH Brull! Double IPA 8.0% 6.50 - 10.00
CH Appenzeller Swiss Stout 5.0% 5.50 - 8.50
IT Peroni Nastro Azzuro 4.7% 5.00 - 7.50
CZ Pilsner Urquell 4.4% 5.50 - 8.50
UK Punk IPA 5.6% 6.00 - 9.00

And there's space for 2 more beers on tap for next week

Re: The International Beer Bar - Zürich

Here's our Christmas / New Years opening times folks. On New Years Eve we will be locking the doors at midnight but serving those "locked in" until 1 or even 2 in the morning.

Thanks everyone for the support and custom!

Re: The International Beer Bar - Zürich

Hoppy new year everyone!

Just a couple of updates.... we're changing our opening times slightly, we will be closed on Sundays until the spring when we will get our license for our terrace. But we will now be open Mondays and open now until midnight every night.

Our beer of the week (actually for this week and next) is the US Founders Centennial IPA (7.2%) on offer for 8.00 for a 35cl bottle (down from 9.50).

And our first "Meet the Brewer" evening is now fixed for Tuesday February 10th 7 - 11pm and the boys from Bier Factory Rapperswil will be here to talk to you about their history, their plans and of course their beer. All their beer will be 10% off on the night.

Thanks everyone for coming by and giving us a great opening few weeks!

Re: The International Beer Bar - Zürich

The first of our special German beers arrive tomorrow, some of which are exclusive to us in Switzerland and include some new wave brewers making ales, stouts and IPA's. My favourites are Ratsherm Pale Ale and Maisel & Friends Bavarian Ale and a brand new beer Flying Turtles IPA from Berlin (but which will not be ready for shipping until end of Feb unfortunately).

We have also announced our regular "Big Bottle Mondays" which start next week (on Monday funnily enough). 10% off all Big Bottles (over 65cl) on the night... all ideal for sharing.

Cheers!

Yup, we try to have a good mix of beers on tap for tasting... a couple of lagers, a stout, a pale ale and a couple of different IPA's. For people who don't really know much about beer beyond just lagers (and TBH that's mostly locals) but who want to move on to something different, we usually offer them a taste of Rappigold (Pale Ale) and Punk IPA to find out which direction they would like to go.

I have to say, that after 6 weeks, we've found that amongst inexperienced locals, it's the Swiss girls who are much more adventurous when it comes to trying different styles. They also tend to drink much more too

Pilsner Urquell should be back on tap today and we're waiting for more 523 IPA from Bern and Trois Dames Rivale (an Irish Red style) from Vaud.

Re: The International Beer Bar - Zürich

We've got a lot of new beers in including Oedipus Thai Thai, a Dutch Tripel ale brewed with chilli and coriander. It sounds strange but tastes amazing and has a great rating on ratebeer.com, from Canada Queen Molly pale ale and Novia Scotia Stout, from Belgium Orval Blonde and Gulden Draak, from Germany Ratserrn Pale Ale, Weissen and Pils and Schönramer Grünhopfen Pils, Pale Ale and IPA and Maisel and Friends Bavarian Ale, Indian Ale and Chocolate Bock.

On tap right now we have Rappi IPA, Brull! Double IPA, Punk IPA, Swiss Stout, Quollfrisch and Pilsner Urquell. And going on tap at some point this weekend we will have the amazing 523 IPA from Bern and a collaberation beer with Storm and Anchor Victorias Secret, we have the last 30L in the country and Westmalle Dubbel from Belgium.

Cheers, have a great weekend!

Re: The International Beer Bar - Zürich

We're going to start offering lunches as of tomorrow. Just Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the first couple of weeks. We're starting off with pies from Meat Pi (Beef Bourgignon, Chicken and Mushroom and Spinach and Feta this week) served with mixed salad. Price is 21.50 including coffee and tap water but we have plenty of soft drinks too if beer or wine at lunchtime is not your (or your bosses) thing.

Soon we'll also have toasted filled Focaccia with salad too.

Cheers!

It's our first "Meet the Brewer" event tonight. The team from Bier Factory Rapperswil will be at the bar giving tasters and answering questions about their beers and what drives them to do what they do.

They're really looking forward to meeting the beer drinkers in Zürich and getting feedback on what you like, and might not like, about their beers.

They're here from 19.00 - 22.00. See you later!

Personally I'm not much of a fan of thee fashion beers that have fruit extracts, curry or spices in them and end up just being glorified alcopops. But I'm not a fan of the all so similar grandpa lagers either. My favourite beers are the ones that create variety by choice of ingredients (using non-standard strains of yeast and hop varieties for example) and non-standard brewing techniques such as the Belgians seem to be the leaders in.

I do agree. I love trying 20 different IPA'S, different because they use different blends of hops. But I have to say I have been surprised by the Thai Thai (if that is what you're referring to)

I look forward to trying some of these on Friday, and probably Monday, when I am over there celebrating my birthday

I really like the wild hop and green hop bitters that I get over here in the UK
