Isn't 11-13 a bit young to start programming and hammering at a keyboard for hours on end, unless you want them to have a nasty bout of RSI (carbpal or tendonitis) my the time they are in their mid to late teens?

Nah, I was messing around with Z80 assembler when I was 13.

The info-event with some fun programming will be on coming Sat (23 th)
at 4 pm to 5 pm in Oberwinterthur.

Yes, please PM me, then I will send you detailed info.

Friends of course are welcome. For planning I should know
- how many (10, 100, ...)
- how old they are
- how many girls/boys
for adapting my program to the youngsters.

They're programming, not playing games

If they're using Scratch or something like that then it's not keyboard intensive anyway.

Yes Tom dearest, programming, one of the common causes of RSI in the IT industry. Google it if you're unsure.

Anyway no worries, I just thought it was a young age to start all that, having first-hand experience of the problems it can cause.

In all honesty I think the biggest RSI threat to youngsters these days comes from the xBox/Playstation controllers. I doubt that a bit of programming is likely to significantly increase the risk.

Controllers are significantly more ergonomic than an average keyboard and mouse, and are much more comfortable for extended use. That is common knowledge and supporting information is available on the internet. As an ex-RSI sufferer I can also confirm this without reservation.

Anyway I didn't intend to start an argument (I know the topic pretty intimately anyway), people are free to do whatever they choose with their own sproglings.

Exactly .... at least nearly:
They are learning to program in Scratch their own games - and then playing them. After a solid Scratch knowledge we could go on with Python - till then their finger-musculature (and more!) will be trained enough for that.

I thought you might say that.

So you needn't worry to much Richdog, it's more drag-and-drop than thousands of lines of code.

Re: OPEN EVENT Programming for Kids and Teens WINTERTHUR

I would encourage anyone with teens to come to the open house!

My son has been doing these classes for several months now and he loves them!! Sabine is a great teacher - she teaches in both English and German so my son is learning computer programming skills AND improving his German at the same time! There are also other Swiss students that he is getting to meet. The classes are also small in size which is better for learning.

We have been very happy so far and I can't wait to see what my son has created on the 22nd!
