Relaunched SwissWinterSports website

The SwissWinterSports web site has had a makeover and has been soft-launched. I wanted to get people's feedback, so would appreciate people swinging by and letting me know. The site is, as always, at swisswintersports.co.uk and it is targetted largely at swiss-based English speakers who want to ski or snowboard or otherwise do fun stuff in the mountains in winter.

A lot of the stuff on season opening dates, resort conditions, prices etc hasn't been made available yet, so that will be loaded around the end of this month. There will also likely be a new provider for weather. The main thing I wanted to get feedback on is whether the GUI works for people and what enhancements people would like to see on top of what is there already. The main principle of the redesign has been that the site should work as well on your handy as on your desktop, without moving too far away from the old look and feel.

There are landing pages for people in different cities: Basel, Zurich, Bern, Lausanne etc.

The site is generally a labour of love but it does cost me to run it, so I'm always open to commercial suggestions or customised requirements.

Re: Relaunched SwissWinterSports website

Hey Outrage,

I came across your post looking for information about skiing and it caught my attention as I work in the digital marketing field and have built a few websites myself

The homepage is beautiful, I really like it and the other pages are nice as well. What I noticed however is that overall there is way too much text and I can guarantee you that most people will not take the time to read all of that -- users spend only a few seconds per page!

You are probably trying to stuff keywords in but that's a mistake, I would suggest you rely on your blog for that and focus on long-tail keywords on your homepage, less of them but more powerful for Google algorithms.

Your homepage should be short, simple and to the point so visitors know exactly what information they are going to find. Come up with clever catch phrases and exciting information to grab their attention and send them off to other pages where detailed information will be found. If you map out your site well, the ones who click on the other pages are wanting more information and will spend more time on your site and longer time per page. I see you have Google Analytics set up so you will be able to see a decrease in bounce rate, I promise -- LESS IS MORE!

The site responds quickly so that's great. The chart is a little difficult to read but it's great information to have, can't you integrate it as an interactive image like the swiss map you have right above it ?

Good luck with it all

BR,
Emily

Hi

Website is nice. I may use it. However, I checked for flumserberg and the piste map is well out of date, and the google map showing where to go to is also incorrect. So I'm not sure I'd trust the website yet.

Regards,
Steve

Re: Relaunched SwissWinterSports website

Thanks for the feedback.

@emilyjolie, that's really useful analysis. I do feel it is a bit content heavy, not so much for SEO to be honest (although that is clearly important), but to be comprehensive. I have been trying to think of ways to reduce the visible content without getting people to surrender their location. The graph as you say is a bit crap, I used Google's graphing capability but realise I am going to hand craft it, like the map. Just got to find the time when I'm not doing the day job!

@Evolvedlight, I try and keep the information accurate, so good to have people report inaccuracies. Much appreciated. Every November I try to get all the main resorts to give me the latest piste maps and check all the prices and stuff are right, then follow up as best I can. Some resorts are better to deal with than others. I'll be doing that next month so will be sure to get Flumserberg fully updated. What was it on the map that you found incorrect - it isn't really centred on anywhere specific, but maybe it sounds like it would be more useful if it was.

I really do appreciate the feedback. When I first started collating stuff about places I wanted to ski when I moved to Switzerland I had wanted to do a wiki, but couldn't get enough interest. At some point I hope to hand it back to the community but for now ANY feedback is appreciated, but especially feedback as useful as this.

Re: Relaunched SwissWinterSports website

On the map (http://www.swisswintersports.co.uk/flumserberg.php) it links to some hotel. It should be

https://www.google.ch/maps/place/Dra....2817026?hl=en

or

https://www.google.ch/maps/place/Ber....3028036?hl=en

Ideally you'd be able to have multiple map points per place of different categories. Nice to be able to mark comments like "Big Car Park", "Other big car park" for those places with two car parks geographically separated. Flumserberg and Hoch ybrig are examples of that.

Specifically on the Piste map, looks like you are using a version from 2014 - you don't show the new lifts and pistes that opened last season.

FWIW I also think you understate the weekend overcrowding there!

Re: Relaunched SwissWinterSports website

I will get an updated piste map. I did post on my blog (Alpine Winter Blog) about the new lifts last year but missed out on updating the piste map, not sure why.

I had generally put a random map on the pages, usually to try and show the lifts, but it is a good idea to have the centre point a car park as I guess you are right that the map is of most use to drivers. I've updated the Flumserberg page, for the first co-ords you mentioned.

I know how bad Flumserberg is at weekends and would avoid, but it is such a delightful resort mid-week!

Would put links in, but admin might take the posting down if I do.

Re: Relaunched SwissWinterSports website

Looks like a nicely designed site and runs fine for me, but I agree that particularly the home page looks very cluttered. I would be tempted to have a one line heading/intro at the top and then the nice-looking map straight away.

If you want to keep the resort summary text I would have it on a separate page. You could also put a number of links along the top to the main pages, next to the "home" link.

Yours, and others, suggestions have been duly incorporated.
