I had an appointment with Susan today. The camera is soooo cool and she did a wonderful job cleaning my teeth. I'll be back again next year :-)

Sorry Janite, for the VERY late response. Yes, we do whitening, though it is not my focus, and yes we can recommend for your son's retainers.

Dental dilemma dealt with

After living in the US for many years, and getting used to the awesome standards there for Dental practices, it was hard finding or trusting a 'good' dentist here in Europa. I was even willing to travel back to San Diego to my old dentist, whom I had faith in.
Well, I have finally found an awesome dentist here in Zürich, www.healthysmile.ch . The surgery was very modern and clean. The staff friendly and professional. It is a very comfortable experience and the work I had done was painless, relaxing, thorough and surprisingly inexpensive.
No need to fly back for a clean to San Dog, rest assured, this practice is excellent.

Re: American Dental Hygienist in Zürich

Yes, we do provide whitening, although I am more on the conservative side. My first priority is your health. Often, after the cleaning, and the removal of tarter and stain, a bleaching is not at all needed. However, if you still desire lighter teeth, we can provide that service.

Hey, have a look at this guy's teeth. He smoked non-filtered cigarettes. This is the result of the first one hour session. He came for a second treatment, and it was amazing...

Thank you ( again ) for another wonderful, warm, fun filled and hospitable session, with you so early in the bloody freezing morning with your colleagues. Clearly this field is your passion, including helping the deserving.

Re: American Dental Hygienist in Zürich

Another rave for Susan. My teeth needed some major TLC and I have a "United Nations" tooth (patchwork emergency fillings from three continents) which will need a few visits to get fixed. My teeth look and feel great today and we have a plan for how to fix my special tooth. I actually had fun at the dentist!

Also, most importantly for Americans: I did not get Switzerlanded with the bill: YMMV, but I paid the same price I would have paid for the same treatment at my home dentist in New Orleans.

Thanks again!

Hi Susan
Is it easy to get to your praxis from Zurich HB and how long does it take with the tram? Also how long is an adult session?

Ta and seasons greetings!
So SORRY for the late response...

The practice is a four minute walk from Tram 5 end station or Tram 13 LAUBEGG stop and a one minute walk from S10 Binz train station. VERY easy. or Park directly in front of practice, up against the window..FREE.

Sorry for the late answer...

Independent Hygienists are not required to use the TPW and I prefer to use pauschal prices as I am a sort of "full service" type of professional and do not like the idea of 5 minute intervals (Swiss system for DHs)

Basically,
Children 50-80
Teens-young adults 120
Adults 140-160

However, the dentists I here use between 3.10 and 3.80. Mostly, 3.50

Does that answer your question?

Re: American Dental Hygienist in Zürich

Another thumbs-up for Susan and her business. I decided to give it a try based upon the reviews on this thread, and I am very pleased.

First of all, when I inquired about the possibility of having both teeth cleaning (hygienist) and complete checkup (dentist) done, I was promptly told that it was possible and I would just have to book an appointment on a day when the dentist, Laura, would be there.

Both dental checkup and cleaning were very thorough, and I am quite pleased with the assurance that my teeth are healthy, and also that they look great after the cleaning!

I can highly recommend Susan. She is very gentle and professional !

As a dentist in Basel, I can vouch for Susan. Susan cleaned my teeth after I had just been to another hygienist - there was big difference !

I would like to give Susan a bump on the forums and also recommend her to anybody else on the forum. I recently went for a routine cleaning but she did that very well and managed to do it gently too! Best of all, she got some tough stains and tartar buildup out. I would go back for my next dental cleaning.

Re: American Dental Hygienist in Zürich

Hi Susan,

was wondering if you have an opinion on cleaning the teeth of very small children ? I know a toddler who has calculus in the middle and base of his two front teeth - any tips ? Dentist was reluctant to do anything because of the possibility of causing a life-long fear of dentists!

Also, is it recommended to floss the teeth of small children ? My kids all know how to brush, and have been to the dentist recently for checkups and cleaning, and the 4 year old's teeth were 100%, but should they be flossing ?

Thanks!

Swisspea

Re: American Dental Hygienist in Zürich

Hi Sweetpea,

In the right hands, the dental hygienist can set the stage for a lifetime of good dental care, especially for small children. However, not many dentists or hygienists are willing to take the time, or have the patience with little ones. Unfortunately.

My motto:
  • Easier to take time with small children, than to repair fearful adults
  • Pro-active anti-trauma ....start early, with gentle hands and your children will benefit from a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Additionally, some small children do get plaque and tarter build up, and some even get a chromogenic black stain on their teeth. All is removable, in the hands of a good professional, with experience, with small children.

Personally, I LOVE these little guys...

As a dentist myself, I have, of course, met many hygienists, but Susan is one of the best. I even travel from basel to Zurich for her to clean my teeth!

Re: American Dental Hygienist in Zürich

You guys have been amazing! Thanks so very much for all your support. I just love what I do, and am glad my big sister told me what to do, when I was 18! She said; "Susan, you WILL become a dental hygienist"! I followed her plan, and who would have known, it would be my entrance ticket, into the lives of wonderful people, around the world? EVERYBODY likes to have gentle and thorough care...a no brainer!

HOWEVER, after three years of independent practice, I have decided to give the keys back to the dentists and to focus on taking care of you, and not the business. Dental business does not interest me...taking care of you does! For this reason, I am moving into a small group of high quality dentists, across from the Hauptbahnhof. The website looks over the top chic, but the staff and doctors are super nice and commited to quality care. So, if you are looking for me...come to www.cosmodent.ch It is my new home.

could you please give the price of a standard clean and polish.

In Switzerland, the price of a normal dental cleaning and polish depends upon the amount of time, and who does it.

There are two types of dental hygiene professionals in Switzerland; a Dental Hygienist (DH) and a Prophylaxis Assistant (PA). Dental Hygienists are allowed to provide the complete service needed to prevent periodontial (gum) disease. PAs are only allowed to polish/clean the visible part of the tooth, above the gumline.

Because of this, I suggest you take care to only shop for prices. Ultimately, the "price" is your health. Longterm, complete professional treatment will save your teeth, and save your money. Some dentists try to save money by hiring PAs, without informing the patients. Personally, I find this unethical.

Sorry for the long winded answer. A typical session with a Dental Hygienist, in Zürich, will cost you between 140-180chf. I hope this answers your question. I charge between 140-160, and give special prices for youth and children.
