A lot of people underestimate the efforts it takes to import food, especially into a restrictive country like Switzerland.
I'd like to give an example for this to illustrate just how bad this is:
I asked in Globus whether they had salted butter, real salted butter, not the sissy-stuff in the little green wrapper, something like Beurre au Sel de la Guérande. Apparently they are not allowed to import it, the only way to do it would be by importing the butter and salt separately and then mixing it in Switzerland. Just silly. And don't even get me started on VAT laws...

Heinz Baked Beans in Coop are produced in Germany (see label).
They don't taste the same and don't have the same texture like the english ones.

Exactly! We had to get an import license from the "Ministry of Fireworks and Explosives" :-D

They taste great to me, not as sweet in fact. Certainly not sufficiently inferior to second-source them.

Re: Britshop.ch - British/English food online!

Was just having a discussion with a mate about the greatness of mince pies, and then got paranoid that they may not exist in Switzerland.

Oh the joys of finding 18 pies for 18.90 CHF

I cannot wait till Christmas

Re: Britshop.ch - British/English food online!

It would be superb if you had an outlet in Zurich, or just somewhere to pick up the stuff.

I think far more people would buy from you if you had some form of presence in Zurich.

I do understand that you are willing to deliver but that is a mental barrier as well.

Don't mean to criticise at all, I love what you are doing. In fact, I will give you some reputation right now.

Have to agree with Hugh - a physical store would mean I would get a lot more british shopping.

Re: Britshop.ch - British/English food online!

Thanks for the input guys...

As some of you may know we only just started the business one year ago.
We live near Lucerne, so that is already a reason not to open up a physical shop as most customers come from Zürich, Basel or Geneva.
Also renting a little shop for 2000+ a month vs. renting a storage room for 500 a month makes a big difference. We would have to be a lot more expensive if we would do that...

@BrianB ... A pickup point would be a different story and worth considering. We could deliver to that pickup point once a week based on the orders.
I will announce here in case we start taking applications for people who want to run a pickup point :-D

Who knows...maybe we'll consider moving to ZH in a couple of years

Good stuff.

Keep us up to date on that then. Maybe you could even do a trial run for two months and see how it works out.

Cheers

Very vaild point - I must confess I didn't notice you were in Ebikon

For me the issue isn't so much unwillingness to order online, it's the hassle of moving money to a UK account so that I can pay over the internet - so a pickup point idea where I could pay cash would be perfect for me too
