I'm pretty sure someone has stolen my bike!

Hi all,

I left my bike chained to the bike railings by Schmiede Wiedikon No.33 Bus stop this morning. I came back this afternoon to find it gone! Before I jump to the obvious conclusion, i did park it facing the opposite direction from the other bikes and i don't have any permit on it (should there be one?!).
Those are the only two things that may have precipitated its disappearance other than it being half inched i guess....

Can anyone shed any light on the situation?

There's some kind of police station just round the corner in Zurlindenstrasse, same building as the Kreisbuero (community office where you go for residence permit related matters), maybe make a report there?

Sucks. It's gone.

Doubt the fuzz have taken it, although you parked it in the wrong place. You have to tell them anyway to get the insurance details. Sorry for ya

I will, just wanted to make sure it wasn't something of my own doing first!

It's not insured, oops. It cost me 120CHF, so i'm not exactly going to cry myself to sleep, but it was doing a good job, oh well, anyone else got a cheapy bike going?

be careful - the first thing they might ask is "what sticker was on it" so you might want to buy a sticker, remove the bit you would stick on the bike and produce the counterfoil when asked

Re: I'm pretty sure someone has stolen my bike!

"The fuzz" (thanks for enriching my vocabulary ) only takes it away after it has stayed at the same place for weeks (it marks them with chalk).

So it's only 120 Fr., but if the police finds it again, it'll cost you nothing so all you invest is 15 minutes at the police post. When mine got stolen, I didn't show them my vignette number (yes you need one, read this) and wasn't asked for it. However if you know the frame number, that might be helpful.

Aha, so it should have some sort of sticker on it (for future reference?)

"vingette". 4,50 from Migros IIRC. Third-party insurance. See ChrisW's thread

Re: I'm pretty sure someone has stolen my bike!

Does the price of these things vary ? I never knew. They come with some extra insurance blurb too. Mine has "Genrali" written on the documentation. Mind you I have a "Vignette" rather than a "vingette"

Re: I'm pretty sure someone has stolen my bike!

Yes, the price varies, however the insurance is exactly the same everywhere this year (2 mill. Fr. damages to others). It wasn't always like that. When only 0.5 mill. Fr. were covered by the vignette by law, some insurers covered 1 mill. Fr.

Generali Insurances is the market leader, they sell about three quarters of all vignettes. Also the Migros Budget ones, for example.

Gotta pick one up tomorrow, just pumped up the tyres, looking forward to cyclingdown Badenerstrasse tomm. morning.
Thanks to the OP for sharing I live on Zurlindenstrasse and wondered about the safety of locking up outside in the good weather...

Howdy neighbour. I think I probably just got unlucky, when i originally got it, i left it unlocked around the corner and had no bother, guess i just got unlucky.
I only had a combination lock, not an expensive thicker one.

Re: I'm pretty sure someone has stolen my bike!

Hi Brett,
What a shame, everyone keeps their bike locked up in here to such an extent there aint enough room.

But there are loads of bikes to be had 2nd hand I'll ask a mate who just moved to Dubai if we wants to shift his, he's in Wallisellen.

Otherwise veloboerse.ch or auktionz.ch or the usual ricardo/ebay.

Thanks, that would be good. I would go and report it tonight, but I need to set up broadband at home after I was unable to last night, so Swisscom are phoning me back! Arrrgghh, it wasn't a good evening!!

ah, ye olde combo lock. 20 seconds to open - and you get to keep and use the lock too

Re: I'm pretty sure someone has stolen my bike!

Go to the Saturday flea markets around Zurich and you can probably buy it back - happened to a friend.

Also there is a second hand bike shop near Helvetiaplatz that allegedly seems to end up with a few bikes with dodgy histories.

Haha, that would give me a good laugh anyway...I still have all of the original documents for it so should be easy enough to prove if i ever came across it again!
