I'm honestly a little shocked to hear that other peoples' comments and opinions matter so much to some of you.

I personally don't give a rat's ass what most people think about my shape or looks or disposition. And I tell them as much if they insist on airing their opinions anyway. I don't recall too many second attempts...
You're "shocked" that people with insecurities get upset about callous remarks that make them feel even worse about said insecurities? Seems a bit Psychology 101 to me, but ok...

Re: "Helpful" comments on others' appearance...

Can I just point out that it is not just men that mention this stuff.

Mum in law remarks everytime I meet her that I am now alot fatter than when I met her daughter and how she hasn't got any Grandchildren yet.

EDIT - at an entirely different time in my life and definitely nothing to do with the Mum in law.
Also been told (as I was taking me boxers off) that she thought I would look better naked, thanks for that.

Can I ask why you were taking your boxers off in front of your MIL(F)?

It's not many men who are willing to make such sacrifices in the interests of good relaitons with the MIL, but PlantHead takes one for the team.

Ahh damn.
In case it wasn't clear that was on different occasions.
EDIT and different people damn it, honestly people.

I did not have to pass an MOT test with the MIL...I just threw up in my mouth at that thought.

Re: "Helpful" comments on others' appearance...

I think it is a cultural thing, really...People trying to remind you as if you forgot what the priority should be, it's quite constant this mentoring and unsolicited advice. I mean people even bond on quite discriminative small talk, how could they know better if nobody told them to stuff it. And not all folks do it, no, it's a certain type. Maybe it is time we started reminding people that one can live without their ill comments, since we always know what is "wrong" with us, don't we, or don't consider it wrong. Why should anybody's weight concern them. I wouldn't go to them and say their constant puffing is making their skin old and withered, either.

Re: "Helpful" comments on others' appearance...

Why would you say anything unfavourable to someone who is naked in front of you unless you are a) a doctor (preferably plastic surgeon) or b) a personal trainer about to make some changes?

Re: "Helpful" comments on others' appearance...

Can't disagree with that statement, rudeness is always abhorrent, but handling it is key; in a social situation, if you can block a potential attack and deliver it back to your aggressor 10 fold (while also remaining civil yourself) you can in turn make your aggressor look like the idiot for saying such a thing. The trick is to be laconic and sharp witted.

Unfortunately women have developed a sort of 'double speak' victims appear to request advice but are then purposely alarmed by the (euphemized) response, kind of like 'taking offence entrapment'.
