Re: Swiss - the airline

Update is that they are (currently as of "see post time") flying tonight.

If not then I am driving over to fetch them.

They couldn't have been expected to go "home" - they are students and as such have no home . One is at Cardiff and the other Aberystwyth. The trains are also absolute crap.

It's things like this that make me realise that the UK really is broken - it's no longer just a joke but stark reality.

Re: Swiss - the airline

Ive been stranded in London b4 with Swiss on two occasions actually, both weather related.

First time was this time last year when it snowed in London btw (has BAA learnt anything?).They just cancelled the flight, when I tried to check in on-line about 3-4 hours before the flight. I rang them up at a phenomenal cost and ended up on another flight 3 days later. So I bunk down in London at my own/works expense. I ended up buying another ticket with AerLingus after two days on one of their flights out of Gatwick to Zurich (this service has since been disbanded). I got a refund from Swiss but less the taxes, which was an outrage, they would not compensate for the hotel. I figure this is because the rebooking was done over the phone and not at the airport.

Second time was at City airport a few weeks ago and they put us in a nice hotel for the night and I got a seat on the next days flight with BA. That is after cueing for 2 hours. There was one, sometimes two attendants doing all the re-bookings! But as mentioned also here by another poster, the ground staff are contractors not Swiss personnel so the quality of service varies accordingly. They simply are not as accountable as Swiss staff.

If you ask me its more the blame of BAA who are owned by Ferrova...something of Spain apparently. I read today that they made 1Billion last year but obviously not a lot of this was not spent reinvesting on 'snow' infrastructure. It's a shambles when necessary infrastructure such as airports are privatised in what is essentially a monopoly market......

I say Bob! Could you get one of your girls to inquire as to whether her allowance of self-raising flour can be doubled as a gesture of goodwill? I could do with a kilo or two, will pay double

Re: Swiss - the airline

Sometimes I think these so called airports (especially in the UK) are more like shopping centres than airports, but that's just my opinion.

Could be worse, your daughters could be flying British Airways from Heathrow, who AFAIK have now cancelled 5 out of 6 flights today on top of all the flights yesterday and Saturday.

Not to mention the 5 out of 6 flights they have cancelled tomorrow as well. My sister is now re-booked on a flight on Thursday...we'll see if they have managed to get their act together by then.... I realize LHR is a huge airport and BA is a huge airline, but it hasn't snowed since Saturday lunch time....

Re: Swiss - the airline

Girls are safely home. The fact that the flight was 2 hours late into ZH seems trivial and our 3 day ordeal appears to be nothing compared to what the poor people at LHR and Gatwick are facing.

Note to BAA:

1. Buy a fooking snow plough or two
2. Get some salt
3. Pull your fingers out

By the way, the UK gov. chose this week to announce a new high speed rail link from Birmingham to London. Excellent. You'll be able to choose which airport you'd like to sleep in...... unless there are leaves on the line.

Re: Swiss - the airline

So glad to hear they are with you and you can begin to spoil them rotten after their and your ordeal.

Just hope that some of our other forum friends also have some good luck to get where they need to be.

Hope your family have a very Merry Christmas.

That's a very radical solution....on the verge of being rocket science

Congrats on getting your girls to CH.

The airlines don't get any benefit from canceling or delaying your flight and they're suffering like everyone else
Most of what you typed I agree with, except that! they most certainly do get a benefit from cancelling a delayed flight as it then doesn't count on there flight delay stats, easyjet is a master of these tactics (having just spent 4 hours sat on a runway with them, only for them to cancel the flight)

Re: Swiss - the airline

My wife is still stuck and we're running out of ideas. Swiss are still not answering the phone and every number we try says to call back tomorrow. In the meantime LHR are not letting people in unless they are on a flight leaving today.

I see Swiss flights leaving but we have no way of communicating with them.

I'm starting to consider trying the other way and going to England on Friday. It might just end up being two of us stranded, and of course we have guests arriving (if they can fly) on the 26th, 28th and 30th.

Christmas on my toblerone

Re: Swiss - the airline

As mentioned the people with a swiss uniform or ticket agents are not empoyed by swiss, they are agents from serviceair or swissport and this includes the swiss ticket desk in ZRH which is staffed by swissport.

Have fun getting refunds, based on personal experience it might take a while!

oh and if its cold or wintery weather or foggy fly from heathrow not city!

Why is this relevant? The ticket was bought from Swiss, they're working on behalf of Swiss and wearing their uniforms. The published phone numbers that nobody is answering are for Swiss. You can outsource many things but you can't outsource responsibility.

I don't know if it isn't already too late for this, but this morning there were business class seats on the Zürich route from London City airport on the 24th.

its relevent because you get numpties that are working for a multiple airline handling agent, today swiss, tomorrow ba, day after air france etc etc, the agents couldnt care less, its not thier company getting the bad rep so they are not bothered.

The phone numbers worked for me perfectly the last few days

Agreed, but surely its in the power of Swiss to do something about it and either employ their own ground staff or better manage their suppliers? It would affect price of course but at the moment I don't know what I'm getting for my money that I wouldnt get from Easyjet at 1/3 of the price.

Bah, I'm just grumpy because I miss my wife.

You may want to take a look at this article from the Independent and start figuring out who you will write to at Swiss to get your compensation. My understanding is that even though the weather is beyond the airline's control you are entitled to food and lodging.

http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/...o-2164830.html

Do your daughters live here in CH or in the UK? If the latter, how far away from the airport do your daughters live? Could the airline reasonably expect them to return home? If they live here then the case is clear.

And, oldmanc is right, Birmingham has no local Swiss staff, it is a handling agent.
Here the official text of BHX airport :
Handling agents

Remember to check boarding times on the screens once you enter the departure lounge, they vary by airline

Services such as check-in, baggage handling and aircraft services are contracted to ground handling agents at Birmingham Airport by the operating airline.

There are currently two ground handling agents offering these services, Servisair and Swissport.

Swissport is not the same company as Swiss International Airlines, but is in Spanish ownership (Ferrovial) while Swiss International is 100% Lufthansa owned.

A couple of weeks ago my Swiss Air flight from London City Airport to Basel was cancelled due to heavy snowfall and I had to spend an extra two nights in a hotel waiting for a flight out. At the time, I was told by Swiss Air that they had no hotel rooms available and if I wanted to try and find somewhere to stay myself I could claim the costs back.
This morning, on BBC T.V, an "expert" advised that if an airline cancels a flight it is liable for the cost of hotel accommodation, 3 meals and a phone call. I have written to Swiss Air to start the process of trying to get a refund for the costs I incurred but I would be interested to hear from anyone who has already been successful in doing the same & any tips they have to speed the process up.
I a few years ago in Milano Malpensa could not board a booked Swiss flight due to incompetent folks at Swiss. Had to go by bus to Lugano, take a (nice) hotel in Lugano downtown, and then the train to Zurich. I had to place my claim with Alitalia and within some 3 months got fully recompensated.

Ferrovial are the same people that own Heathrow Airport...so that should tell you something.
