Is there a penalty fee for loosing intentionally the return ticket with Swiss?
You mean if you choose to cancel the return portion? Nope, no penalty.

Re: Swiss airline ticket price rant - it's illogical

The same thing applies to Eurotunnel. We often found that two one way tickets cheaper that a single return ticket when scooting over to England and back. Sometimes it was cheaper to buy TWO RETURN tickets and only use half of them due to the weird way the pricing worked.

They can't do anything if you don't use the return flight but apparently if you don't use the outward flight then the airline may cancel the return part.

Due to my father in the UK having to enter hospital for a hip replacement operation I have to stay longer there and change the return part of my flight from the UK in January.

This was with easyjet from Bournemouth to Geneva. It's clear with easyjet that they charge GBP30 to change a flight and any difference on the price on the new flight, which came to about £80 extra at this late stage.

As Zurich is a better destination for me, I looked into Swiss and BA flights from London. Now here's the nonsense and it's with Swiss. To fly one-way London > Zurich is £388 and to fly return is £114.

So of course people will buy a return and not use it. And they wonder why there are no shows and over bookings.

Meanwhile BA will do a single flight for £58. So Swiss lost a customer...
Right you are of course, that logics and airticket-prices are a difference. But the topic is as old as Methusalem. Divide 114 by 2 and you have 57. What BA did was to add 1.-- and offer 58.-- . Unusual but why not ! But generally, full-service-airlines try to sell return-tickets and discourage people from one-way-tickets. Low-tariff-airlines however are different again. I don't know what EasyJet offers on the London-Zürich route.
